Engine tuning ?

Last year I put a non stock (free flow) exhaust and a cold air kit on my '07 GT . I see lots of folks that have the cold air kit talking about their electrionic gizmo that changes the electronics on their engine. I priced ione the other days and it seems kinds expensive for you to use once a year maybe.

I am told I don't need one. I am told that I need one.

Should I get a hold of one (borrow) or do I really need one ?

Thanks
Ian.

Depending on the intake that you put on your car, you may not need one. My JLT intake required one and you can get them in the 450-500 range. You can't borrow one due to the fact that they will only hold one stock tune at a time. IE they become locked to a specific vehicle until that vehicle is turned back to stock. Take a look at dasilva racing in Pickering ontario. I have bought stuff from them and have been pleased with their service so far.

Basically their are two different tuning modules that are most popular. sct excalibrator and diablosport predator. The best one to go with is the one the person you get a tune from uses.(the tuner is the hardware, the tune is the software that's on it) If your car is running fine than you don't "need" one.(what intake do you have? what all did you change with the exhaust?) The question is do you "want" one. If you want more power from your intake and possibly exhaust, than the answer is yes. If you want to be able to adjust things yourself then also yes. MOST of the power with an intake and tuner comes from the tune not the intake itself. Other things YOU can do with them is adjust your air/fuel mix, spark, rear axle ratio, speedo adjust for different size wheels on the back, temps that the fan comes on, rev limiter, etc. You can also change between tunes. You can get ones for different octanes of gas 87, 91, 93, etc. You can get a tune for more power (if you keep your foot out of it you can get better gas mileage with the power tune too), you can get a tune for fuel economy, you can switch between them. Some of the things the tune can make a huge difference with is throttle response of automatics, it can also be made to change the crispness of shifts.

Some of the best tuners to by one from (you buy the tuner with a tune on it) are Brooks Speed - Custom Ford, GM, Dodge Tuning, Mustang Performance Parts & Upgrades by Brenspeed, Tillman Speed, Inc. > In-House Dynojet 224xLC, Custom Tuning, Insallation, Performance Parts!, BamaChips Tuning, etc.
