Gas Filler

I am currently on a road trip with the wife heading east to see what we can see. :)

Anyway, yesterday when I tried to fuel up the little flapper on the "easy fill" thing wouldn't open so I could not get the filler to go in the little hole. I had pre-paid for the gas and so after a few minutes of trying to get it to go in the little flapper finally opened and I was able to fill it up. After I was done filling I removed the filler and tried to put it in and was unable to again. So I can get it to open after fighting with it for a while.

Has anybody ever had or heard of this problem before? I'm past warranty so I would rather fix it myself. Thanks for any help. :tup

Jeez, first Autonut goes south and has issues after power washing his engine, now def has problems with the fuel filler flap. Can anybody take a road trip without something going wrong? lol No help for you, but plenty of sympathy.

ChadStang 06-20-2015 09:13 PM

I've never seen any problems with them before. Try testing it with the funnel from the trunk. If that works maybe the filler was too small?

def67 06-21-2015 12:12 AM

I hsvr not heard about the trunk filler so as a last resort I could go that way, however I would possibly have to remove all my luggage to do that.

def67 06-21-2015 12:21 AM

Also I just read online that sometimes a specific gas station may be the problem doe to the nozzle being out of round from someone dropping it or what have you. However if i push it with just my finger the flapper will not open.

Autonut 06-21-2015 07:21 AM

Sorry def67,

I can't be any help to you. I just checked mine and it doesn't have the flap in the filler tube. Ford must have changed them between 09 and 10. I'll keep checking online to see what I can come up with for you.

It's a little funnel that sits with the jack and tools above the spare tire.

The way the filler is designed, you can not push the flap in unless you use the filler nozzle or the little funnel.

Thanks for the help guys. Tomorrow we are going to the Mint in Winnipeg, then heading further east hoping to get to one of the great lakes. I will be fueling up sometime tomorrow and Im hoping it was just a bad nozzle at the gas station I was at that was stopping me.

Apocalypse Pony 06-22-2015 03:25 AM

Always wanted to visit the Mint in Ottawa, I've dabbled a bit with buying collector coins. Nothing serious, you could go broke in a hurry, but they got some nice stuff. Kind of like buying toys for a Mustang! Have fun!

I've had the filler spout get stuck when trying to remove it(a gas station in the US). I just kept fiddling with it until it finally came out. I then took the filler spout from the trunk and pushed it in and out repeatedly until it the flap opened and closed smoothly.
I'd say it was probably more the spout was deformed or the angle of entry was off by enough to cause you the issue.
I hope the rest of your trip is smooth and trouble free.

Well I filled up today and had no problems! It must have been the nozzle at the last one I was at that was no good. At least I learned something from this thread!

We are just north of Kenora now and holy crap its raining hard! We were gonna try to get to thunder bay but I think we'll pull into Kenora for. The night cause of the rain I can't see on the road!

Autonut 06-22-2015 07:53 PM

Wow, you're only 21 hours away from my place.
Glad to hear that you two are settling in for the night. Wise choice.
Enjoy your evening.

We're done going east now, we actually back tracked because of the rain yesterday and are at Falcon Lake for a couple days, then heading back home. My wife works on sunday and I work monday so we don't want to rush to much on the way home.

Autonut 06-29-2015 06:34 AM

Well welcome back. Enjoy work, I'm off for a couple of days.:)

Apocalypse Pony 06-30-2015 05:14 PM

Did you ever make it to the Mint?

Yes, it was pretty cool, bought some collector coins while i was there.

Apocalypse Pony 07-01-2015 12:33 PM

I've never been to the Mint stores, I've ordered stuff from their website though, and even picked up the odd set and singles at Canada Post. I'm a sucker for anything flag related, like some of the 50th anniversary of the flag stuff they've had out. Got to be selective though, like buying parts, its not a poor mans hobby. lol

Have you gotten one of these Molson Canadian flags out of the 28 pack yet? :tup I have.

Don't drink anymore, but that whole marketing campaign for Canadian was brilliant , I'll bet theres one of those flags on Ebay somewhere. Reminds me of the old Royal Reserve Whiskey "Proud Canadian" label, similar deal. Cool stuff, nice score for the garage AN.

Autonut 07-02-2015 07:40 AM

I knew you didn't drink, but you never know one of your friends may have one. I got that picture off eBay because I was too lazy to go out to the garage and take a picture of the one I have. If I come up with an extra one I will let you know. :tup

def67 07-02-2015 07:50 AM

I can't stand canadian beer, bud light for me! So I usually miss out on that stuff too.

This is what you need to pick up and throw down with your spare if the factory filler tube is missing (my car has a factory filler tube down with the spare tire).
$1.99 from Canadian Tire.
Works perfect on my 2014 and grabbed it to have a spare in my garage.
Newer nozzles at gas stations can lose the tip (it is press fit on the end of many nozzles and if that tip comes off then the remainder of the nozzle tube won't open the flap allowing fuel to the tank).
I work in the industry and it is rare but I have seen this occur.

If you ever find yourself in a jam at a station like you did you can put the funnel in your filler tube and at least put some gas in.

Thats pretty much as far as we got before it rained like crazy. So we stayed a couple nights at Falcon beach.
