What tune do you guys run?

I was wondering, what do you guys use for a tune on your s197? I'm looking at getting a bamachips or brenspeed tune, are there any others that you're happy with?

Lime GT 04-08-2008 10:25 PM

I'm running a Brenspeed xcal2 with a 87 performance, 91 performance and oem stock tune so I can run the factory tune which I can adjust for speedo calibration, tire size, etc.

I've heard good things about Brenspeed that's for sure. Does anyone run a Bama tune on here?

wpgfordguy 12-02-2008 10:44 AM

I've been using Xcal2's lately,

My '05 3v was tuned by Rick Erdman at Amazon Tuning
My S281 By TeamJDM ( not japan domestic market)

I've had good luck with both,

Miata guys are fanatical about their Mega Squirt kits!

Here is their tuning section on Miata Turbo ( click here )

I've heard nothing bad aboot tunes from bamachips, brenspeed(had one from them it was good), brooksspeed, tillmanspeed.

marcusdj73 02-23-2009 09:07 PM

+1 on Brooksspeed

Kaisoboy 06-25-2009 01:31 PM

I run the Bama 91 race and love it. It really is a whole different car. Gone is the throttle lag and the car pulls hard and will go sideways in first and second with a cherp in third.

NickGT 06-25-2009 03:28 PM

Another bamachip user here. I have 89 perf. 91 perf. and 91 torque. I run 91 Torque most. Worth every penny!

2k6s197 06-25-2009 04:24 PM

I run Bama chips...

I have 87 Performance, 91 Torque and 93 Race...
LOVE the 93 race...

currently using 91 Torque... it's good for a DD

karrnutt 06-29-2009 08:55 PM

I have Bama tunes 87 octane performance,89 octane torque and 91 octane race. I have only used the 87 octane and found it changed my performance dramatically. Crisp shifts, superb passing power, decent mileage more improvement than I had ever imagined .

kena 06-29-2009 09:01 PM

I run a Tecmotion Dyno Tune on the track and a BAMA 91 perf tune on the street.

That's cause your special Ken and were not worthy...LOL

Love what you've done to your car by the way...looks Haaawwwttt!!!

rpatyna 01-22-2010 07:45 PM

get a custom tune on a dyno for the area you live in.

Kaisoboy 01-22-2010 09:23 PM

Will be setting up a date with Matt this spring for a Tec tune. No Better place than Tecmotion in Calgary!!! Then maybe he will give me one of his stickers. After he tunes your car you slap that puppy on and its instantly good for another 10 HP...lol

Like any place there are good and bad reviews. I have heard enough completely horrendous reviews to keep me away. If you just have boltons I'm sure it wont be a problem.

Whosit 01-23-2010 10:03 AM

Right now I am running a tune from American Muscle but when the car comes out in the spring I am taking it to Dasilva Racing for a dyno tune.

Kaisoboy 01-23-2010 10:05 AM

I know Matt personally and have never heard a single complaint from anyone. Not to say there aren't any. Yes my car is just bolt ons but a car specific tune is always better. I can tell you this. Even though I run the bama 91 race tune, it could use some tweaking. The MAF needs to be tuned, we could squeeze a few more ponies out of the tune as well as most online canned tunes are just that canned.

I agree completely. I've had a frpp tune, which was complete garbage, then a brenspeed tune which was decent but I was able to get another 9rwhp by tweeqing the a/f (my car liked 12.5 at wot the best. any richer or any leaner and i lost power haha) with my handheld, and then a brooksspeed tune which has been by far the best (for power and driveability) and I was able to get another 4rwhp out of it with my handheld on the dyno.

You stock 4.6 guys with a SC or Turbo have to be careful when you approach the 420ish spot cause that is just too much power for your rods and it is like shaking the dice every time you tromp on it or go to the gas pumps. Build the motor and take away the worries.

Yea I'd agree with that too. Most agree around 450rwhp is the top end before the rods like to get some air time, and that's with a perfect tune. Most don't realize just how important having a perfectly dialed in tune is. For example, a local guy threw a procharger on his 06gt, was dumb enough to take it for a spin around the block before trying to tune it, and blew a piston through the side of the block. But then again the guy obviously was of a deminished mental capacity because he paid 6500 to get another STOCK 4.6 281 from ford when for that price he of course could have got a decent built whatever. :lol

My SCT excal3 is on the way with 87 street, 91 performance & 91 race tunes set up for my FRPP cai.
I ordered it from American Muscle and I do not know if the ex Bama guys or ex Tillman guy wrote the tunes but either way they are said to be kick ass tunes.

I have to burn off a tank of regular first I guess before I can load the 91 tunes.

I'll report the verdict on the tuner/tunes once I get them loaded on the car.

Kaisoboy 05-07-2010 09:03 AM

Bama teamed up with american muscle. I believe once you buy a tune from them now you get tuning for life.

kena 05-07-2010 09:07 AM

Change that 87 Street to a 91 street, you are not going back to regular gas after you run that 91 race tune, especially if you have an automatic (you will love the shifting).

DTK 05-07-2010 12:15 PM

Yes, AM has the Bama free tunes for life program on new tuner purchases no matter where you buy future performance mods.

I was originally going to buy the tuner from Brenspeed but they will only update your tune for free if you buy the performance part(s) from them that necessitated the new tune.
I understand why they do this...they have to make money....but it's a buyers market on these tuners I guess and most people are probably likely to buy future parts from a place that they get their tunes as the comfort level is already established.

I did the street tune as 87 octane on purpose actually.
I only drive the car on nice days and mostly only on weekends so my plan is to run the 91 performance tune (maybe the 91 race...who knows) as my driving tune.

Once I install the bullitt cai and load the 91 tune then I am set.

However, if by chance I ever go on an extended weekend trip somewhere, I will take the tuner with me in the rare chance that I am somewhere out of the way that may not have supreme and I have to put 87 regular in the car.
Then I can just change to the 87 street tune and I will still be ok with the bullitt cai and all should be well.

You cannot use the bullitt cai unless you have a tune for it because of the bigger maf size so I am trying to think ahead for any future one off situations.

You can't get 93 here either. Otherwise I would have went above 91 for my 2 tunes.

TJ_HOOKER 10-23-2010 07:43 PM

my sct came with the car. previous owner said the guy who did it worked at steeda, and is now on his own in florida. it shows 87-89, 91, and 94, since sunoco's are gone, and only a few new petro canada's have the 94, i have been told shell vpower 91, and 2 bottles of octane boost are an equivilent. not sure if it's true, i have a petro with 94 within 20 mins. i ran the 87 when i drove down to summit racing. got between 650 and 700k to a tank.

Blackheart4355 10-23-2010 07:56 PM

My 04 had a Steeda tune on Sct XCal 3 just before I did the engine build..now it is a custom tune by Brian Wall at Wall's Rod an Custom just outside of Winnipeg
