Daytime Running Lights

Just curious if anybody knows how easy it is to disconnect the DRL on the new mustangs. No handbrake methods, I would still like to use my cruise control. Or how I could re-route the DRLs to operate the running lights in the grill instead. Does anybody offer this service in southwestern ontario?

BIZ 02-08-2006 05:07 PM

ON the last style there was a module under the front bumper...I did mine myself in 30 seconds. I would imagine if you find the module your good to go...good luck!

Are the '04s and '05s similar? Any idea whereabouts or should I just feel around?

Thanx Eric! Will check it out when the snow melts from the driveway and see if that is where it is.

Call a Ford dealer and ask where the DRL module is. The parts guy may be able to tell you.

The one on mine was very easy, just like Biz said. :tup

there is a fuse you can pull inside the cabin for DRL's...same as previous years.

Is it clearly marked and does it affect anything else?

P.Meister 02-09-2006 09:36 AM

check the owners manual to see if it does in fact exist on the 05+ and its location

IEATSRT 03-21-2006 06:08 PM

Well i've looked for a module under bumper on drivers side, DRL relays, fuses and can't seem to find anything on the car or in the owners manual. I've talked to the organization called "drivers against daytime running lights" and they are going to look into it as well. I've also posted on some other forums and contacted ford for info but nothing too concrete is coming back to me. I am guessing it may be comuter controlled on the 05+. I am thinking that it might require a tune or deactivation code to disable the DRL's. Will keep on looking.

SMOKEFAN 03-21-2006 06:13 PM

Let us know when you know, I came up with nothing too. By the where you located, I am curious what the loudmouths sound like on an '05. That is the exhaust I am leaning towards.

IEATSRT 03-21-2006 06:26 PM

Loudmouths sound pretty good... haven't had much time to listen to them yet but i'm satisfied. Got them from Lmperformance... cheapest i could find (email them for a price and they might even come down more - found that out after) but after exchange rate and duties at the border the came in around $400.00. Well worth it though. Maybe we'll start an exhaust thread and get into it there but i'll post some clips later on.

As soon as i hear back about the DRL's i'll post.

I'm up in Northern Alberta, just joined the forum today but it is finally nice to talk with some fello Canadians ehh!

SMOKEFAN 03-21-2006 06:30 PM

Welcome aboard by the way. And I will keep my eyes open for the clips. Thanks for the info, I can pickup the parts my self to save some loot.

IEATSRT 03-21-2006 08:22 PM

Latest word on disabling DRL's. Does sound like it can be disabled by a dealer... now just have to see if a dealer will be willing to do so. found this post on another site.

In a 2006 Mustang GT I imported from the US, I had to provide the dealer with the seven digit Import Form 1 number. They in turn used the WDM to get into the SJB and call the hotline with the import # for directions and a code. Once they entered the code the DRL's came on. Its all in the programming and I doubt that a Canadian Dealer would turn DRL's off as it contravenes Canadian regulations.

Actually lenko is a member here, looked for info on DRL than disappeared I guess.

"Actually lenko is a member here, looked for info on DRL then disappeared I guess."

I'm still around. I did post that message on another board, but that's what happened. In order to get my import inspection approved, I needed DRL'S and I didn't want some outfit to put another module or relay on for that so my dealer researched how and we simply had them turned on by computer as per requirements for Canadian laws. Haven't been back to this board for a while as other boards are more active and have more information. I have added a GT Plenum and picked up a slightly used C and L CAI in the U.S and now deciding on XCal II.

Tungsten Grey 06 GT Premium, auto- goes like hell.

re DRLs - don't the traffic laws make it mandatory that you have DRLs on - at least they do in Ontario. I'd be afraid that if I disconnected the DRLs and got into an accident - that my insurance may not cover me - terrible thought - thinking of a mustang that way !!!

A few possibilities

I have been trying to get my DRL's deactivated on my 2006 GT for a while now so I can get some HID's with High/low beam capability and have been doing a little digging. I have a friend who is a parts manager at a Jaguar dealership and he had a few suggestions for me to try.

First he told me that the DRL's can be deactivated by a dealer via the compuer but no dealership in Canada will do it because it is illegal for them to do so, if you live close to the us border or are planning on going to the US soon maybe you could try to get it done there but I am pretty sure they are not allowed to do it either unless you can prove the car will be staying in the US (maybe borrow someone's license plate)

He did suggest however that sometimes the DRL's can be deactivated at the headlamp switch. He told me that on certain Ford products you can pull out the headlamp switch and there might be a small switch on the back that switches it from Canadian mode to U.S. mode. He also suggested that it could also possibly be a different model of headlamp switch from the US to Canada and that the US model might cause the DRL's to not come on.

I have not had a chance to try any of the above myself but it is worth taking a look at anyway.

I suppose if you have a good friend who is a mechanic at a Ford dealership they may be able to do it for you as well, maybe for a case of beer or two.

That is an excellent idea, I wish I would have thought of that. Can you please let me know which fuse it is as there is no listing for the daytime running lights fuse anywhere in the manual or in the vehicle.

I assume you have done this on 2005+ mustangs and had success because that is such an easy answer I wonder why no one else on the internet seems to have come up with that one.

Quick question though, do the low beam headlights still work when you do this?

This function is controlled by the Smart Junction Box. It is located behind the kick panel in the passenger footwell.
