Cam timing

Ok...just got back from Dasilva's with White Snake, and i got talking to Paul about my engine....discussing different options and we came to the topic of Timing.....i told him that i cant run more then 10* timing or the car looses power. I also told him that the car will not spin tires into second gear cause it falls on its face. He also said that a 5.0L should make power higher then 4800RPM....i rev mine any higher and it sounds like it will blow apart!....he asked me if i've ever had the cam or timing chain off i said no.....He says it sounds like my cam could be off a Degree or 2...thus causing theses issues. This could be a possibilty, as i have experience back fire out the intake on occasion!.....what can i do to fix this?.....pull the timing chain cover off and insect or is it more major then that?.......this was taken apart by the previous own judging by the new gaskets installed....i wonder if he messed around and screwed up?.......any info on this subject would be Great!

If there's new gaskets there, I would take it apart, it could be off causing your problems. I rev mine to 5500 every so often and it feels like it pulls right to that point, sounds like something is wrong to me, where is your distibutor positioned? The module should be pointed around 10 and 4. If you have the time, pull the cover and look into what's going on, also, could it be a non-H.O. engine?

Well, it's most likely a H.O. engine then, sounds like a weird problem you have there, I ran my last 5.0 at 14 deg. for 2 years, ran great, pulled hard. How's the fuel economy? Are you sure all the parts are right for the car? Could it be a plugged exhaust? Could it be the wrong maf or throttle body for the car? Is the spout (puts it into set timing mode-takes away timing advance) connector in place?

yep....Exhaust is all new. Spout is in....Thorttle body is stock. Run 94...until i found out i cant adjust timiing so i dropped down to 91. Scanned the computer and there are NO trouble codes stored....car passed e test with some readings of 0. make 203 hp on the dyno....but wont chirp 2nd gear...wont take timing....?????????

I get 325km to a tank.....doesn't matter if it's city or highway!

fixed problem

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well....i think i may have fixed the problem...me and a friend pulled out the spark plugs...all looked good.....did a compression check on all cyl...all was good.....since the plugs were out we thought we thought we would check and make sure that when number 1 cyl is at TDC, the rotor is at the number one also...and it wasn;t....i think someone put the Distributor in a tooth off...so we fixed it all up........timed it by ear and took it for a quick drive....OH MAN.....turned onto a road...smashed it....went sideways.....took 2nd gear and holy crap...i actually scared myself...car cam around and then back and then back the otherway...my car wouldn't even spin in 2nd before...i also cleaned the MAF too.....not bragging about beating the car...but i think that it made a huge difference.

Thanks for the help guys!!!!

If you would have tryed the timming fix first you would have likely not been happy. I think that the major inprovement will have come from cleaning the MAF sensor. Also note that in a 94-95 stang when you shift gears the ECM pulls a bunch of timming. Ford did this to try and keep transmition brakeage to a minumum. Glad to here you got things running better :thumb1:

I used to be a tech at meadowvale ford and erinwood ford back when thouse cars were new and thats what they did the exsplination was so they would not brake as many tranys with the extra weight they would pull timming and that would reduce power for the gear change and hopefully save the tranys
