Clutch or Trans?

Hi,

New to the forum...Just want to say that this forum is tons of help. I have 1
questions and I have searched this forum on this topic:

I am having issues (grinding) when trying to engage Reverse. From gear 1 - 5 I have to push the clutch pedal in all the way, when trying to engage reverse, it grinds but I eventually get it in. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Charb

Thanks SNAKEBITE! BTW, Nice wheels!

Just to add a little, when the vehicle is off, I put the clutch in and go through all the gears, the reverse still needs to be jammed in! This is my seventh Mustang dated beetween 87 and 95. Finally picked up a 90 again after having my 3 kids!! :tup

Thanks
Charb

Welcome aboard!!
For your issues,it could be a number of things.
1. the clutch, depending on miles, and if it is the original one
2. the clutch cable may need to be adjusted, factory equipped with a factory adjustable plastic quadrant
3. the synchros in the t-5 could be going, but all depends on the miles,or abuse it may had

As for the reverse thing, that is very normal for the t-5's.No way around it if you just go to reverse. The good ol' practice is to go from 5th gear straight to reverse. (While stopped of course LOL)

Yup , what 1LOW3GT said , put it in 5 then straight to reverse, i have the same problem when trying to put it in reverse. The cluch cable should be snug with no slack in it , you can also adjust it by pulling up the the clutch pedal and you will here a click.

Haven't tried anything yet. Leaving work in about 30 mins and will try adjusting the clutch tonight. I just found out that I need to get my car appraised to transfer it to my name! What a cash grab..........:banghead:

My guess would be synchros.

Seems to have worked...I pulled back on the clutch; click, then went through the gears. Went to 5th prior to reverse and it was ok. The true test will be when I drive it. I am thinking of pulling out the tranny this winter and adjusting everyhting.

So I looked under the car after doing all that last night (in my garage) and I saw a small leak coming from the seem of the oil pan. :bleh: Another thing to work on this winter! My 90 LX 5.0 only has 153,000 K's on it.

Thanks for all the pointers! I will have my friend double check the tranny as well.
