Cracked bellhousing on a 5spd?

Was re-doing my rear main seal with my mechanic buddy over the week-end and when we dropped the tranny/bellhousing assembly.......he noticed that my bellhousing was cracked on each side where the clutch cable goes. He had it welded yesterday............looks like new.........but what the hell could cause this.....we had just put in a new clutch and rear main..........I am not lucky let me tell you..........this time I bought ford seals.........and a sleeve. We are puttin her back together Friday and Saturday......I miss driving my baby especially with her new clutch..............

So any idea? My guy says metal fatigue.............??? cracked bellhousing??? hmmmmm

It's a 1994 with 190,000km of highway........

I work at a scrap metal yard where all kinds of auto parts come in busted...things that make your eyes go outta your head trying to figure out why and how. I'd guess it was a casting flaw that got worse over time and cracked.
