EFI or Carb?

EFI or Carb?

I have an 88 lx vert, so it is a speed density, I am looking at doing some major work to it so I need a mass air. I was wondering if anyone here has converted their EFI to carb and what was involved. It seems like it would be a lot cheaper than getting all the EFI parts.

I'm confused...at first you are talking about needing to upgrade to a MAF set-up (which is a fairly simple process), and next to converting it to a carb set-up (also a fairly simple process). Which would you prefer? What exactly are you planning as one may be better than the other depending on your goals.

the reason I put the mass air comment in there was because of the cost, I should have explained it better, for the cost of the conversion kit I could have an intake, carb and cam.

The cost of converting to Mass Air is not very high. You can get a stock Maf for around $35 bucks and an A9L EEC for around a $100. After that it's just a matter of spicing into a couple wires and you're done. Going carb, well you need to get a lower intake, a carb, all the gaskets, air filter holder, and filter...it'll prolly cost you more than you think.

Depending on what your plans are I'd stay SD, but if you're planning big heads, a monster intake, a pretty radical cam, and some spray by all means go carb....you'll make tons of power

Well I was planning to put AFR's on it and a wild cam (not sure which one yet) long tubes, shorty h and upgraded ignition. So far it has flowmaster american thunder, k+n cone, b&m ripper and 4.10's

I'd probably stay EFI with a set-up like that then. With AFR 165s, and old school edlebrock intake, some 1.7rr, stock cam and suspension work (which didn't helpa damn) my buddy had his old 89 LX deep into the 12s, was able to drive to and from the track getting great mileage the whole way, and idle in traffic quiet as could be. It was a pretty slick sleeper type ride. He had considered swapping to a carb, which I don't blame because it would make significantly more high end power but EFI is just so easy...

mass air verses carb

Hey Fabs,ive been building a 89 coope,converted it to a mass air,since all you need to get is ,complete eng harness,ecm,the actuall mass air unit,you also have to get a hugo harness,all of this i was lucky enouhg to find at a local junk yard,if not,you can bye it from mustangs ally in brampton,theres also a guy in ottawa from monruo mustangs hes got everything but make sure you have the rite stuff before you pay,lol little problem i had with a t5 i bought,any how,the cost of intake,carb,and trying to figure out the wireing might be easier this way.that's my 2 cents! :teeth:

lol, i'm still trying to figure out why he had to convert his 89 to Mass Air as they came that way from the factory, or why someone with an 88 would need a whole engine harness to convert it when they're almost identical....just splice into a couple wires and you're done.
