I going to look at a 1988 mustang GT cobra with T-tops. He said it was showroom condtion, where are the most problematic things or stuff to look for that are know as problem areas. This car is not cheap but I can't get it a mechanic for a check as the car is two hours away I need some help please..

I have had my fair share of Fox bodies, and the one thing I would stress is to pull up the trunk/hatch lining and check for rust inside the bottom of the trunk floor, and the edges/seams near the quarter panel. The other obvious places are the bottoms of the doors, but do a really good check on that trunk area, maybe I had terrible luck, but I had a very tough time finding one without traces of rust in the trunk.

You know, when you think about it the fox has a lot of rust prone areas: around the t-top, windshield pillers, shock towers, front floors where it slopes up towards the firewall, front & rear sub frame, areas around the rubber plugs in the floor, joints between the rear wheel wells & the floor pan, rad support, rocker panels, bottoms of front fenders, rear 1/4's & more !! Better have a good look

This car has 500 K on it ??? or is that on a "rebuilt" engine & rear end? Car is high priced, a lot of questions need answered before you drop that kind of coin .

If that thing is as good as it looks, that is one sweet ride, that any Mustang enthusiast would love to own. That's really sharp. Price is a little high, but it is a Cobra, and the motor is done up, and looks super clean. Definately an investment on a collectable car. Good Luck, and at least talk him down a bit

front and rear floors where the lap welds are.. torque boxes. rear inner wheel lip for rust
tops of pillers shock towers door bottoms. rear hatch seem if swelled look for bondo
there are so many sport to look on these car and a t top car makes it more so floors FOR SURE have a good look pull back the carpet and look for scaled or rotted metal

and for the record 1988 no such thing as a "cobra" was just some stickers nothing more ownership still says MGT not MC first true cobra was not till 93

No it isnt a "cobra", it is just a basic GT with a dealer installed "gt cobra" decal.... nothing special. Nice ride though.
