New 5.0L engine rebuild or crate?
#11
Thanks Rickp, I was looking at ordering an engine from Jasper engines, but I think I will try a heavier oil and see what happens. The car still makes good power, doesn't blow smoke or knock or ping. I will drive it till it dies and hopefully the canadian dollar will gain some ground so I can order something from the US. I will give Rolling Thunderz a call

I have never dealt with R.T. myself as a customer. But a friend of mine put about 15k into his motor and they did a lot of work. Typical of shops, we did a lot of standing around and waiting when we made the trek up there.
One thing they always told us is that when it came to porting they were the kings and many shops used them. Of course the sales pitch was laughable until they even showed us the caller ID of customers calling both from the US and Canada. They did a ton of porting end engine building.
I had already purchased my B&W motor before I learned of RT.

Try Paul at Paul Silva Perfomance. He has over 20 years of building SBF only and can build motors for 6 second to street applications. Him and his brother Joe (Da Silva Racing) were formerly J & P Perfomance who were recognized for being one of the top ten Mustang shops by MMFF. Rolling Thunder deals more in Chevy stuff...

Thanks for all the info, I don't mind speding the money on an engine, but I want a quality piece. I'm going to try a heavier oil and do some more research on an engine.
The biggest question I have is what will 300hp feel like compared to a stock engine? Is it enough? Is it worth going to 400hp if I don't race the car? I don't want to lose the back end when driving.

There is absolutely no credibility from someone who just signs up, talks about other shops and pumps another... I mean 5 posts??
What work did Paul do for you? Lets see some pics?
Maybe he installed a set of heads for you, wowser!!! Only paul could do that.

oil press
[QUOTE=rickp;101177]
[Your oil pressure should atleast be floating around to some degree. 0 oil pressure is not good for long durations of time.
Try running 20/50.]
it is true , you should have some reading...........but before ripping out the engine , take a reading with an oil pressure gauge attached to the engine,
don't count on the gauge in the car ........20/50 oil is too thick to run on a 5L
engine..........plus you usually hear the valves rattling if no oil is heading up there.....plus the enine would't turn by hand .try getting the sludge out of the engine , had an explorer with the same prob , low oil press, poured 2 bottles of engine flush in it and changed the oil each time.......simouteniously,
got better oil press, a few passage ways were plugged and little oil reaching the top.......on a new engine........get a 5.4L from an f150 and shove it in.you will be flying literally..........
