Smoke from cat...?

Hey guys & gals, so the g'f & I go to the Zehr's in Simcoe yesterday to get groceries and I happen to come around the front of the store this time, usually I just come in from the back to avoid the speed bumps as my stang sits rather low...or atleast the H-pipe does anyway. So this time I have to go around the front & BAMMM!!! I bottom out on the friggin' speed bump big time, sounded really bad. So while she is in the store I check underneath, everything looked fine.

No big deal, car bottoms out all the time. I checked everything looks ok. so off to work today, get home & I pull in the drive way & I notice smoke coming up from the underneath, so right away I'm pissed. I get out & look underneath on the drivers side. looks fine. I go to the passenger side, sure enough, smoke just a billowing out from the passenger side cat. From the cat it looks like anyway is where its coming from, but its a low lying smoke, kind of just hangs underneath and pours out where ever it can I guess.

But, anyone got any ideas what the heck might have happened here? Or better yet what I can do to fix it up? Provided its from the cat that is. If its from somewhere else, thats a whole nother ball of cookies I guess....man do i hate speed bumps, always have...

Thanks for reading all, and letting me vent, off to the drive way I go with ramps, flash light & a nice cold blue light in hand.

well I would 1st get the car in the air and have a good look at it... sounds like you might have cracked the cat.. when u hit the speed bump.. do you notice a sound difference?? like an exhaust leak? Did the smoke smell like anything??

How low is your car ?? Any leaks ? Oil pan leaking ? OR rear main seal ...then the oil is dripping or some how getting on to your exhaust so when the exhaust is hot the fluid is burning when it hits the exhaust or cat area. U might have a tranny leak also... this could be alot of things.. get the car up in the air and have a real good look at everything..let us know how u make out..

might not have been from hitting the speed bump could be another prob.. good luck with it

Thanks man,

Hopefully it isn't somehting big, I've had enough of that already. It was coming from the cat itself and was not a problem before the whole speed bump incident.

I do have a coroded oil pan, but it has been that way for awhile now. I don't want to rip out the motor to repair it until I can afford to have it rebuilt at the same time, might aswell make it better while i make it healthy.

I will have to see if i can get it up in the air sometime to take a peak at it. There is slight sound difference, sounds almost like a minor exhaust leak, like the headers make when a bolt comes loose or is missing. Or its time to change a gasket on them.

Thanks for answering my post to by the way, I was almost thinking nobody cared or something... :cry2: :cry2: :cry2: :cry2:

no, weird really,

it hasn't done it to me since. I keep checking and so far nothing. Which is good I guess, but still could be bad and I don't even know it, oh well, we'll see how it behaves tomorrow. I plan t work it pretty good tomorrow...haven't played much yet this year...thanks for your interest. I'll let all know if I notice anymore smoke.

It happened to me before with my '88 (smoking catalytic). Turns out, I went over a plastic bag and some of it melted and stuck to the cat. It went away after a couple of days.

Was there any odor to it? i.e. burning plastic or pvc smell?
