Speedometer problem

Now that my mustang is running :) I have very few problems with it...unfortunatly it's terrible on gas...but thats my fault for how I drive it. Anyways the problem I am looking for help with concerns my speedometer. I believe that the cable is loose the needle stays at zero when I accelerate all the way untill the 5th gear when I'm in fifth the speedometer only works when I'm pressing down the gas pedal and this is why I think its loose; however I have no idea how to adjust or tighten this cable.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I unfortuanitly can't afford to drive all the way to oshawa to get this problem fixed unfortunatly I might have to since now most of the gauge cluster doesn't work at all. I'm not sure what nicks rates are tho they look like they'd be expensive tho...just by looking at the work he does

You can't adjust or tighten the cable, usually they don't work or they work, you have a weird problem there, sounds to me like a speedo problem, can you borrow a guage cluster from someone? When it works, is it somewhat accurate?

yea I got one from the wrecker and threw it in but the speedo still doesn't work hopefully I can get it fixed I finally gave up and brought it to the mechanic tonight

yes it is accurate when it works

Nick is in Oakville not Oshawa. A big difference. I would check the speedo gear. :5:

check to see if the speedo cable pushed in all the way behind the speedo cluster... this happened to me a while back the speedo cable was just hanging on he clip on one side

I agree check to see if the speedo cable pushed in all the way at the back of speedometer. :5:

I checked to make sure it is pushed all the way in...it is, it clips into place, it is a pain to get it in and out of there tho. Is it possible it could be on the tranny end of the cable ? a gear there maybe?

Captin Spalding 08-23-2006 05:35 PM

yep there is a gear down there when you pull it out to check it if it look's in good shape put a electric drill on the end of the cable and get someone to watch the speedo turn the drill on and see if the speedo moves could be the gear on the tailshaft of the trans

goldelox_abc 08-23-2006 08:06 PM

I have had this cable off a month or so ago and the gear on the end of the cable appeared to be in good condition; also, I spun the end of the cable and the speedo worked fine...I am thinking it is whatever this gear plugs into is the part that is broken, does anyone have any idea how to fix that? :3:

Ponyryd 08-23-2006 09:00 PM

I would guess that the teeth on the gear are shaved off a bit and the faster you go, the more it catches and reads properly, I'd pull the gear out of the trans and carefully inspect it, also look at the gear inside the trans to see if it looks like it's moved on the shaft or is missing teeth.

Thank you. I'll take it apart and see if I can hopefully identify and solve this problem

Captin Spalding 08-24-2006 03:48 PM

If it's the gear inside the trans you will need to remove the trans from the car and have it replaced

goldelox_abc 08-25-2006 11:34 AM

that would be a major pain...I was wondering if its possible that the cable is the wrong length? :2: since it kicks in when I'm in fifth and not when I have the car going fast in fourth gear

How do the gears look??

goldelox_abc 08-26-2006 01:58 PM

I'm hoping to get it on the lift within the next couple of days to take a look...if my memory serves me right tho the end of the cable was fine...it's so weird how it only works in 1st and 5th gear...
