Running Rough Edelbrock carb

Went for a cruise last night and the car ran great, it did backfire through the carb once when it was hot on start up. Went to go out today started the car , started fine on high idle let it run for a minute and kicked off the electric choke and it was running so rough it would barely idle and then stall when I put it into gear. I managed to get it out on the road and it runs smooth and strong at high RPMs under load but as soon as I let it go to an idle condition it starts running rough and will stall. I noticed a poping sound in the carb at idle when I had the breather off, when I play with the throttle at idle it will back fire through the carb. Could this be a electric choke problem ? I disconnected it but makes no difference . Please any Help would be great.

Thanks

Ric

usually backfireing through the carb is a timing issue , but it coulda been something simple?

I was gonna say did the timing chain jump a tooth or something....?
Normally back fire indicates timing.

After hours of troubleshooting and carb cleaning with no luck , my frustration was starting to get the better of me when I accidentally bumped the fuel line while leaning over to make yet another carb adjustment. WOW THE IDLE SMOOTHED OUT. The fuel line is steel braided and it was resting against the the top of the coil , this was enough to cause the coil to break down slightly. I still did not have the backfire problem fixed. when adjusting the gap of pertronix module I noticed the plastic gap tool they supply got snagged .....Sooooooo I took the ignitor unit off and found a small crack in the ignitor . Replaced it and the car is running great.
