Fix for Oil consumption on Cobra Intakes ('86-'93)

Fix for Oil consumption on Cobra Intakes ('86-'93)

if you have the Cobra intake that is made in China, (like the one I just picked up) chances are you have one that will burn lots of oil by sucking it up through the PCV, due to the small baffle they use under the intake. And just because you got your intake from Ford directly, doesnt mean it wasnt made in china... look under the upper intake, it will more then likely say, made in china...

Anyways i I know first hand about the oil consumption issue, because I had this issue with the intake I had on my 306 in my '88 Cougar XR-7. I burned through 3 liters of oil in a trip from here, to Summit racing in Tallmadge Ohio. approx a 4 hour trip. I am glad I checked the oil when I got to summit or I would have ran out well before I got home. So as soon as I was home I started digging for a solution, and found info for the cure.

You can either buy the proper large baffle from Ford. Part # F6TZ-6L678-AA, or using the template found here: http://eectuning.org/forums/viewtopi...7647b0f4a89689 You can make your own from a clean piece of sheet metal.


Just save the template to your hard drive.

I am a "do it yourself" kinda guy so I made my own.

Here is what I started with, and the small baffles I was refering too.


As the other article by Tom Moss states, you can easily start the removal of the rivets with a chisel. as you strike them, they will start to come up.

Once they are high enough to get the vice grips on them you can grab them and they will twist out counter clockwise easily.

then using a 1/4"-20 Tap, tap the threads in the holes for the new bolts. Make sure you clean any metal shavings out of the holes with brake cleaner or compressed air so you dont get any in your engine on re-assembly WEAR SAFETY GLASSES for either way!

Now cut out the template that you printed from the link and trace it onto a clean piece of sheet metal, and cut that out.


After you have it bent and drilled just simply bolt it on, using 1/4"-20 X 1/2" bolts with a bit of loctite on the threads and a washer under each bolt. you may need to trim it slightly to fit perfectly.

Or for added piece of mind, you can do what I am going to do and just tack weld the heads of the bolts to the baffle, so it is garaunteed to never come loose.

after that you can bolt the intake back on and enjoy cruising with out burning oil....

That is pretty cool.Didn't realise these intakes had this issue.What about the intakes that are found on the '93 Cobra's?Or is it just the ones that come out of the box so to speak?

It seems to be just the aftermarket ones that came from China. I believe the factory ones that were installed on the '93 cobras had the large baffle, or at least never had the oil burning issue.

That is really........terrible

Great that you let us know of the problem AND provide a solution.

I have never heard of this problem before.

The 5.0's with forged pistons were pretty bad on oil consumption in their own right. They sure don't need help

This info is good to know as i maybe looking into gettting a '93 Cobra sometime down the road.
