Ford not ready to divulge manufacturing plans
A day after the Detroit News reported that Ford Motor Co. plans to convert some truck plants into flexible manufacturing facilities capable of producing more cars and crossover vehicles, Ford executives released a statement saying that company officials are not ready to discuss their manufacturing plans.
Ford officials today are meeting in Dearborn, Mich., with Ford plant managers and national and local United Auto Workers union officials.
Included in the meeting are representatives of UAW Local 862 and Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant and Kentucky Truck Plant.
"We are not discussing our product and manufacturing plans today, Joe Hinrichs, Ford's group vice president, Global Manufacturing and Labor Affairs, said in a news release. "We remain committed to sharing information with our employees, retirees and other key audiences as soon as possible."
As a part of the four-year master agreement it signed last fall with the UAW, Ford Motor Co. agreed to replace lagging production of the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer with a flex line capable of producing different vehicles.
"The world has changed dramatically over the past few months for our business and our industry," Hinrichs said. "We know we must move swiftly to face those challenges -- and we are."
The Kentucky Truck Plant, which makes F-Series Super Duty pick-ups, is operating on one eight-hour shift per day in June. It will halt production for all of July, said Angie Kozleski, a Dearborn-based Ford public affairs manager.
The Louisville Assembly Plant will cease production between June 20 and July 20. When workers return on July 21, they will be split into two crews. One crew will work four, 10-hour days, then go on a week-long furlough while the second crew works four, 10-hour days, Kozleski said.
