Ford to Sell Boss 302 Crate Engine for $12,000
Chris Demorro / StangTV

Chances are, if you haven’t already bought a brand new 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302, then you’re probably not going to. It could be that they’re too hard to find, or too expensive for your wallet, which means you have to miss out on the 440 horsepower 5.0 liter Boss 302 engine. Or do you?

If you can scrape together $12,000, about a quarter of the Boss Mustang’s cost, then you can purchase the Boss 302 engine right from Ford Racing. How awesome is that?

If you ask us, very awesome. Ford already offers their 5.0 liter V8 as a crate engine, for about $9,000, which is a pretty good deal for 412 horsepower and 390 ft-lbs of torque. But the Boss 302 offers 444 horsepower and 380 ft-lbs of torque, which should make for a very excellent crate engine that is sure to find its way under the hood of many a project car. Interestingly enough, this lightweight aluminum engine only weighs in at 444 pounds. This is your first (and perhaps only) chance to buy an actual Boss engine right from Ford, and it comes with everything you’d expect from a racing engine, like an 8.5 quart large sump oil pan with revised baffling for hard cornering.

The revised Boss-embossed intake came from Ford Racing’s Daytona Prototype engine program, and included with the package is a manual engine harness and flywheel, as well as the drive-by-wire throttle body. All in all a very awesome engine package, which got us to wondering…what would you put this engine into if you had a choice? We’re thinking a 1969 Mercury Cougar might be the perfect match, but we’re sure you have your own ideas, so let us know!

Fine looking motor, but not sure if it's 12 grand fine!! Might be worth the cash depending on the project.

SNAKEBITE 04-29-2011 04:23 PM

^^^we are agreeing more and more as we age lol as I find that a tad pricey. Hell you could buy a nice 05 GT if you look hard enough for that kind of money.

I remember when the '03/'04 Cobra 4.6L crate engines were going for 15,000 to 16,000?Is this far fetched.Pricy yeah, but miles ahead of the 4.6 in my opinion.

Ok ... RANT TIME ..... WTF would ford sell the Boss 302 motor for an ASTONISHING $12,000.00 (WITHOUT A SUPERCHARGER I MIGHT ADD) when you can buy the regulay 5.0 Coyote Crate engine for $5,000.00!!!!! :banghead:

Ronnie06GT 04-29-2011 07:48 PM

Sort of like buying jeans...Tommy Hilfinger (aka Boss) for $200 or Levi's (aka 5.0Coyote) for $25. I guess the genius's at Ford think the same way...designer names sell!!!

1low03gt 04-29-2011 09:58 PM

I did read in one of those stang 'zines that there is quite a bit of differences between the regular 5.0L(coyoty),and the Boss 302.They just didn't throw the intake on the coyote, and call it a day. They actually went threw the whole thing to make sure it can see the rpms (can reach upwards of 9000rpm) it was designed for....for long periods of time.So don't think for a second that one is getting a regular coyoty crate with the Boss intake. That is not the case.

SNAKEBITE 04-29-2011 11:27 PM

^^^Agreed but still to much $$$$$

herbz 04-30-2011 04:44 PM

How come the 5.0 has more torque than the Boss? That doesn't make sense to me. Is it cause its revs so much higher?

1low03gt 04-30-2011 10:56 PM

The intake design is for more high rpm which aids in more hp,and lose some torque. Both 5.0,and MM and FF's have done dyno testing on the Boss intake, and both have stated lose in torque due to the design of the intake, but have gain hp.Short runner intakes are designed that way, while longer runner intakes make better torque.:tup

I really, really love the Boss 302 Laguna Seca Edition, and the May issue of Road and Track had an awesome article about the car. They took that car and tested it at Laguna Seca, and drove it for all it was worth for 12 hours straight, to ensure that it could withstand the continuous punishment that it would need to handle, in order to compete in a real race situation. $12,000 is a lot of money, and it may be worth it, I wont say one way or the other, but for me personally, I would go with the regular coyote 5.0 and and spend the savings on a superior Kenne Bell charger system. In my personal opinion, that would be a better/bigger bang for my money........just my opinion.:D

SNAKEBITE 05-02-2011 04:40 PM

^^^seems reasonable to me

1low03gt 05-02-2011 08:10 PM

Totally agree, the regular 5.0L would be enough for me to have a base to start off with. This is the engine Ford should have had out when they started to weed out the pushrod version!

SNAKEBITE 05-03-2011 04:31 PM

they are not dumb, keep them coming back with new hp numbers/new tech

Im thinking out loud here, but for $12,000 I might be able to build a pretty nice 5.0 coyote... higher quality con rods, better pistons and top it off with a sweet SC.
A guy that lives a street or two away ( he stops by often when he sees me outside messing with mine and shoots the breeze with me) pulled up last week and says to me " Mario, something seems to be loose under the hood, see if you can spot anything, so he flies the hood open ( Im thinking, maybe he left the oil cap off the old f*cker lol) and there it was.... a sweet looking KB sc!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I asked him how he's liking it says want to go for a spin? Hell YEAH!!! Man, his engine just pulls like a raped ape! 3rd is especially insane...4th continues the awesome heave into hyper speed with the sweetest whine you could imagine.
Later he tells me he had the whole thing done at De Silva racing a known Mustang shop by Joe himself ( the owner).
So new high end pistons,H rods, throttle body, SC and a tune cost his south of $11,000. I would also go this route when I decide to up my performance.
Guys, I tell ya his mustang seriously sings with the SC. He tells me his next mod is updating his clutch assembly.

Missed this Canadian Forum... glad to be back, and to all; hope you're all having a great summer!

12k seems a little steep to me. Strap a blower on whatever engine you've got and you will probably be just as happy.

SNAKEBITE 08-06-2011 03:12 PM

Ford Racing sells the 5.4 s/c for approx 23,000.00 so I suppose the 12k is a deal

5.0GTCS 08-07-2011 08:37 PM

WOW, now that's what I call steep $$$... what is it about this SC that makes it worth $23,000.
It's gotta be more than the name "Ford Racing" I guess I'm just surprised that a Mustang SC could be more expensive than at least 2 crate 5.0 engines.
