Thats weird! I always recommend Ford gears as I rarely have to shim them, I've always had to shim the Richmond Gears...... I've also seen a couple of prematurely worn ring gears from Richmond, never had that problem with genuine Ford stuff. That sucks dude, I hope things work out for ya.

Those are new gears with different type of cut and a bevelled rear face. They have to be set up differently than the non "N" gear. Can't recall the precise changes, but I will look them up. If anyone is NOT familiar with installing "N"'s - don't do it. I think they are only available in one ratio 3:73 or 4:10 - not postive which one.

Thousands of people don't seem to have a problem. Perhaps had you got the correct gears, you wouldn't have this problem. |
the first thing the previous owner did to my car was frpp 4.10's that was back in mid 1999, and the car still runs minty great.

I have ford gears as well.. no problems
|
Been using Ford gears as well with zero issues. Perhaps it's a bad run of em.
|
I had a set of Ford 3:73s installed a month ago and the shop said they were a breeze to go in. I don't have any noise, etc so maybe it was just a bad batch. I do have my box so I'll take a look at the part no.
Sorry to hear about your experience. |
Agreed. i have FMS 3.73s and had FMS 3.55s in my last Stang. never had aproblem. maybe you just got a bum set? i've always been told to run the FMS gears and i recomend them to all. If ya do a search on corral or stangnet on gears everyone says to get the FMS gears.
where did you buy them? |
I have ford racing 4:10's in my car, they dont make any noise and are great so far. I actually heard bad things about Richmond but never any ford racing gears
sux to hear your bad luck man |

not sure man. I have no doubt in the abilities of your installer.
I know when you install gears you check the pattern to make sure they mesh good. Im thinking if something was wrong with them or they never fit wouldnt it show up when they where checked? Im not laying blame, so dont think that. just wondering what would cause it. maybe just a bum set? |

yeah, must be a bad set. i mean with the amount of people that use them, honestly this is the first set that ive heard that are like this.
sorry to hear it man. |

i didnt think things like gears would have a warrenty normaly. however for a failure like this id inquire for sure!
|
If the gear shows a proper pattern but has an issue it should be no problem getting warranty. I had no issue last year returning a set of FMS lowering springs that ended up approx 1" lower than advertised.
|
No sense running around blaming anyone. The "N"'s are a different cut, and DO get set up differently. I'm pulling my hair out(what little I have left) trying to find the specifics. If ANY installer is not familiar with them, they wont be right. It's one of those things, the instructions are in the box and you say "I know how to install gears" and toss them. We ALL do it!!!
|
gears
well all I can say is I just checked my box cause my 4:10's are still sitting in it, and I'm happy to say no "n", I hope all works out well with your next set.
|
ive looked on a few online sites and seems like the only gears that have an N is the FMS 3.73s.
|
Ford Racing's catalog says this about the M-4209-373N:
"Replaces our popular M-4209-F373. New manufacturing technology utilizing a Face Hob process which features a single-pass pinion tooth machining operation compared to a conventional three pass process for machining. CNC cut and lapped gear teeth. Higher strength and better quality gears are produced with the Face Hob process. Note: These gears look a little different, the gear teeth are cut on a different angle and the ring gear has a bevel on the back of the gear." This partnumber is called out for 'Mustang/Ranger/F-150 8.8"' axles. Sounds like one or more of a bad setup, a bad set of gears, possibly a mismatched ring & pinion (since they are lapped as a matching pair during machining)... |

I've had one frpp gear set over the past 8 years that we had trouble setting up.
Ford racing gears are, by far the easiest to set up, and much quieter than richmonds if set up properly. Sounds like you got a bad set... The "n" replaced the regular 4209f373's a couple (or more) years ago. |
why is this a sticky?
to hiughlight that someone installed his gears wrong? :laughhard |

It was noted above that the old number gears were replaced with the "n" gears. Which meant the correct gears were installed. That means that any problems with them must have been related to the installation. |
i have had richmond and will not tell anyone to buy them. They where set up perfect with the best pattern a mid backlash and no matter what they where noisy. I now have 3:73's ford gears and they are whiper quiet. I love them and i will never go back.
