Ford tring to put Mustang after-market out of business?

Anyone else seen anything about this?

Ford suing "Mustang" parts distributors

this was on mustangtv.com:

"I am very concerned about Fords Latest better idea. To sue Mustangs plus and other after market parts suppliers and force them to change their name. I can fully understand copyright rules. However their are better ways to protect your copyright than to bully and abuse the very people who support you. I am also very concerned about the fact that not many seem to know about this. I would like to see every mustang owner sign this petition to allow mustang parts suppliers to license the name mustang to use in selling aftermarket parts. I want Ford to know that they are going about this in the wrong way. If enough concerned customers let them know we care maybe they will think of a better way to protect there trademark. My recommendation to Ford is to offer to license the name to companies that sell mustang parts. That way ford makes the money they so apparently need, keep control of there trademark and avoid angering there loyal followers anymore. please everybody sign this petition."

http://www.petitiononline.com/65must65/petition.html

This off another web-site
"I tried to order a trunk lid mat from grandesignmats.com (MDM) last week, and he is shut down right now because he has been contacted by Ford's copyright legal firm with a demand for $10,000 and to cease using Ford's copyrighted names and images immediately or they will sue him for copyright infringement. He said Ford's attorneys are systematically contacting everyone who uses the name "Mustang" in the name of their company or parts, or any of Ford's copyrighted images (running pony, "GT", etc.), and demanding they cease immediately or be sued, plus huge cash payments. This means every company with "Mustang" in their name will have to change the name of their company. Ford is offering to license their copyrighted names and logos, but is demanding huge fees and percentages of sales. The $'s are so steep that they are going to drive all but the biggest, most well healed companies out of business. They are apparently aggressively going after the "little guys", even the ones making aftermarket dress-up items as a hobby on the side."

Just a thought - but the Calgary Stampeder logo looks a lot like the Mustang pony? I wonder who registered it first in Canada - Calgary or Ford.

Ford, tried to sue the stamps a few years ago, seems to have settled out of court.

"Trademark Battle Erupts between Ford and Calgary 'Stampeders'

Dispute over allegedly similar horse symbols may proceed to court

Calgary, February 19, 2001 -- Call it a battle between two horses.

According to the Calgary Herald, a "trademark battle is brewing" over the Calgary Stampeders' use of a running horse logo. The logo is extremely similar to the Mustang logo of the Ford Motor Company, and Ford has applied to register the image in Canada.

The Stampeders team was formed in 1948 and began using the running horse symbol about 30 years ago. The Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964. Stampeders owner claimed "clearly we were first," and the team's lawyer Reid Schmidt says the logo is a symbol of the team and its home.

Ford has applied to register the logo for use on merchandise such as T-shirts and coffee mugs. If the company receives the trademark rights the Stampeders team will be forced to change its logo and lose "millions of dollars" on its current inventory as well as "the added cost of redesigning and marketing a new logo for the team."

The current proceedings are "now in the hands of lawyers engaging in a trial by paper" and the issue is not expected to be resolved for months. According to the Calgary Stampeders website, www.Stampeders.com, Ford has not demanded immediate removal of the Stampeders logo, and the dispute will be settled according to the Trademarks Act of Canada. That law requires proof that a trademark has been registered or that it has been used for a period of time."

This seems to be the reason why the law suit disappeared

".........reminds me of the story of the stampeder's logo, the galloping mustang........Ford unveiled the Mustang in '64, with the horse emblem on the grille, Calgary adopted it on their helmets in '65.......Ford threatened to sue the stamps unless the emblem was removed, claimed copyrights had been violated.......then a little college in the midwest US (can't remember which one) [SMU] came forward with evidence that they had originated the design some 10 years earlier for their sports program and one of the Ford designers had attended that school.........the school administration was absolutely giddy 'cause if Ford could successfully sue the Stampeders then surely this college could sue the a$$ off Ford big time and reap the benefits.......the Ford lawyers packed up their attache cases and went home........end of story...."

I wonder if this is all part of the stratagy that failed back in the early 90's to do away with the Mustang? First they sink their well known performance division SVT and I am not so sure they are not now after the Mustang period. After all it is a non environmental friendly vehicle. The Mustang is also causing a lot of grief at Ford by making them money? Ford is basically flexing it's corporate muscle in a battle that they (Ford) will ultimately lose with their followers and consumers. They are intent on hitting every magazine and after market business that has kept Mustang alive since Ford tried to replace the Mustang with the Probe. Oh if poor old Henry could see his company that was created by racing and kept afloat by their success in racing could only see it now. Seems the bean counters are being replaced by vultures and the big loser will be the Ford customers if they have any left. :
