Hood Scoop
I was thinking of ordering a hood scoop for my 2006 GT. I looked into a factory ford scoop but they are $350 unpainted. American Muscle has them painted for $199 US plus shipping. I like the idea that it comes prepainted ready to be installed. Some of the reviews indicate they dont fit exactly right at the front. Has anyone had any experience with these aftermarket hood scoops?

No experience but I would want one that fits perfectly. Hopefully someone can help you and good luck
|
No experience with the hood scoop deal, but only advice I would give is that cheaper does not always equal better and as far as painting goes, I would have more faith in dealing with a local business than a mass produced part that would have to be shipped back if you had issues with a run, orange peel etc. Sometimes it's worth the cash to get something that fits right the first time - not saying the Ford stuff is always perfect, but I'd have more faith in the fit than something aftermarket, but that's just me. Same goes with having it painted at your local shop, especially if you have any sort of experience with them from work you had done before.

Hood Scoop
Thanks for the advice.

No problem dude, you can always get advice for the right price around here - FREEEEEEE!

Were giving out FREE advise? When did this start? And WHERE'S THE MEMO???
(kidding of course) I'd go with the Ford product. A bit more expensive but if the other one doesn't fit right you will have wasted your money - every time you look at it you'll get upset and may just end up taking the thing off in the end. You work hard for your money (at least I do) .. save up a little longer and get the good one. |
I got one of those, I believe it`s a Roush but I could be wrong. The paint matching is quite good, however, the fitment could be better.
The bottom leading edges that contact the hood need to be filed for a flush fit. Secondly, because there is nothing holding the front few inches to the hood, it tends to lift a little when highway driving, more so with a strong headwind. I`ll be removing mine shortly to shave it and will see what can be done as far as keeping the scoop firmly positioned on the hood, perhaps with some 3M tape. Other than that, I like the scoop, nicely styled and proportioned. Hope this helps. |

I have the Roush scoop. My car has windviel blue Lemans stripes painted on by the dealer. The Roush matched perfectly. I painted a White stripe down the middle of the scoop to match the body. I think total I paid around $300. The dealer wanted $500 painted and installed. I'll tell you it was with much measuring and sweating that I drilled the first bolt hole in the hood. I just didn't trust the 3M by itself. I put the tape on too so its not going anywhere. Oh and the dealer could not get the Roush scoop so I picked one up at a Ford dealer in Detroit and paid the duty too. Huge box!!!

I've seen a few of the Roush scoops and they look and fit good.

Update
:tup
I finally got around to the hood scoop a couple weeks ago. Removed it from the hood, cleaned off residual goo on all surfaces, sanded down the leading edge of the scoop and applied a continuous strip of 3M tape all the way around. I was a little concerned the tape would be visible but it is barely percievable and makes for a much better contact to the hood. I also applied some tape along the entire length of the black grill part as it was not supported. So far so good, went for a brief highway drive to see if there was any lifting of the front part of the scoop with a headwind and it seems ok. I`ll call it mission accomplished if it holds up during my trip to Virginia next week. :tup |
Nice!!Glad it worked out for you!!:tup
Hopefully it holds up for you on your trip. |
I suppose having the wife or a friend crawl out while on 401 to see if it was lifting would be frowned upon :)

i've seen several rousch scoops and they all looked good to me and i am pretty fussy.

If I had to do it all over again I would go the CDC shaker route. When I got our 05 all that was available was this one from CDC, and although it looks good and the fit was excellent I much prefer the shaker.

|
Damn it! Fine. Where do you park your car at night? :)

Aaaaahh, what the hell , thats what money is for! :D
|
kechke.... Is that a complete hood or an add on scoop? Looks like it might be big enough to cover the hole from my shaker.
|
watch out for the 'runny nose' on your hood scoop. You'll wash the car and dry it and put everything away. half an hour later there'll be a water streak running down the hood.
hey then you get to polish it again!!! |

So that is just a scoop not a hood? Having a hard time finding one to cover the hole in my hood.
|
what style do you like? low and swoopy ?taller? working or for show?cowl induction or open at the front?
|
I really like the look of this.

My 2006 GT has a hood scoop by 3d Carbon - I like it better than the Ford ones because it has a low, wide appearance. It measures apprx. 26" wide, 24" deep and 1 5/8" high at the front. Don't know how it is to install though because I bought the car with it already on. :)

One of the first mods I did to my other ride is clear corner light lenses, and yes they were advertised as "direct fit" they were anything but direct fit, I had to mess with them for a whole afternoon to get them to fit right by reworking the fit with a dremmel tool,I just rather pay a little more for the effort and get something that WILL fit perfectly. To me, "rice" is parts that fit/look cheap! |
I actually was looking at the hood scoop that is being offered by the dealer for the 2011 mustang GT but decided against it:
1: It serves no purpose other than looks. 2: Goes on with 3M tape, (black, instead of transparent) 3: $600, and it comes unpainted; and $300 to paint/install. 4:Because of the tape fastening it to the hood, one can easily see the tape at it's base (tacky looking) so I just forgot about the whole idea,If I'm to spend a grand, it's going to be toward improving performance at the very least! |
that is about how i feel. i checked out the Ford original scoop for my 06 and by time I add paint it will be about $600 without installation. I dont really mind the look without it. I thought about checking the wreckers but I imagine they would want to sell the whole hood. I will keep checking the internet want adds. maybe one will show up there. Then again, i like the one that Wenstang has.

As a side note, wenstang that is the EXACT hood that I saw on a white 2011GT CS at the dealer, which is what I was referring to in my posts. Low,wide, nice style but way over priced for what you'd get.
If it sold for $500, scoop, paint and install, and all taxes in, I would have considered it. |

I do like the wider scoops for the 05+ Ponies=sexy
