MT-82 transmissions
Hey guys!
I'll be treating myself next spring or this fall if I get a great deal with a 2013-2014 Mustang GT convertible. I would like to get some feedback from the members here who own a manual transmission equipped 2011+ Mustang. Are they really that bad and do they really break that often? I don't plan on racing the car nor driving it too hard.

When they first came out there where problems with the clutch slipping but it was because of the bolts that held the trany to the motor and ford has fixxed the problem. Besides that it seems that not many have problems now unless they have cranked the power up on their motors.

Well I got the info on multiple forums on the net as well as in many articles. Most of the problem I've read about were about notchyness, the whining of the gears, problems with syncros, getting locked out of gears and peoples going through 2-3 transmissions within the first year...I am fully aware that peoples without problems don't go on forums to tell about it so I imagine that those who actually had problems had them for the reasons you mentionned above and that they represent a small percentage of Mustang owners...

In my 2013 I had some issues with 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, when shifting quickly.
It would sometimes not engage 2nd (missed shift or skip over to fourth).
The shift from 2nd to 3rd is it would just go into 5th).
I thought it was me just being to aggressive shifting as it didn't happen often while just cruising, but as you've researched many others have this issue as well and I'm not a novice to manual transmissions.
I installed the Barton 2 post shifter bracket (Barton Industries Two-Post Mustang Shifter Bracket - MT-82 2011BM2PB (11-14 GT, V6) - Free Shipping) I bought mine through DaSilvas in Canada on their dollar for dollar sale.
I've not missed a shift since the install, and I've had the car to the track for the roadcourse and dragstrip. No extra noise or roughness as I've seen with others that have chosen other remedies.
I've yet to try one with the MGW shifter so I can't comment on that remedy.
So I wouldn't let this issue deter you from a 13-14 Mustang.
The 11-12 have a electronic shift skip between some of the gears if your rpm is in a certain zone. So when those years skip shifts it's part of the transmission & engine logic. Yo can get a custom tune that has the ability to remove that electronic nanny. It was dropped for years 13 & 14.
The gear whining if it's what I think, could be the differential. From what I understand SOME Torsen differential have this issue and Ford does fix them under warranty, so by the time you get a used Mustang I'd hope this has been taken care of. This differential is not available on the convertibles and I think was only available on the Coupe version that ordered the track pack option. (Larger Brembo brakes, transmission scoop for cooling, larger capacity rad and the Torsen differential (maybe different springs and shocks)
These are great cars with the Coyote engine and these issues are very easily and cheaply solved. Now in saying that and driving some friends 2015's, the new ones handle differently yet again (and in a good way). On the track the 2015 stock GT's run really well on the road course. I've changed the coils and panhard bar in mine to lower it a bit and change the suspension geometry and it handles way better than when it was new, and runs great on the track. Mine came with the Brembo brake package which was just the larger brakes and suspension upgrades (couldn't get the track package on the convertible)

The only thing I can add is related to cold weather driving. If you are planning on storing your Mustang in the winter, the following does not apply.
During the winter, do not be surprised if at -15*C and colder you have trouble shifting into 2nd gear or the shift is stiff when the car is cold. In my Mustang, at those temperatures, until the car is up to operating temperatures I cannot shift into 2nd gear. I've taken it to the dealership a few times. The first visit they changed to a thinner fluid which shifted the temperature the problem starts at to a colder point. In the end, the service department told me they spoke with Ford engineers and were told the transmission is fine and that is how it should be.
