Mustang steering wheel help

I have recently started my black interior swap in my 96 gt after swpaing out the dash and steering column i swapped in my new black wheel but am having trouble making the steering wheel come flush up with the steering column cover, there is about a half inch gap between the wheel and cover i tried tightening the steering wheel bolt as tight as i could but it wouldn't suck the wheel back if any one has either swapped out a wheel or has any idea please let me know any advice would be helpful.

Thanks in advance guys

Whats your trusty Haynes manual say? I didn't have this issue when I swapped my stock steering wheel for my FR500 wheel - actually, if the install's not complete you should really think about upgrading.

Have you pulled the wheel off to see if there is anything like dirt in the way?
Have you tried to put a little bit of grease to help it slide while tightening?
