Oil advice - I need your thoughts.

On my other vehicles I use Mobile 1 5W20 oil.

I see on my baby V6 it Ford says to use 5W30 oil.

I'm wondering about using the same Mobile 1 5W20 as I use in everything else in it.

Thoughts...????? Please.

Kaisoboy 04-04-2010 06:16 PM

If it recommends 5W30 that is what I would use even if it is a syn oil.

SNAKEBITE 04-04-2010 09:18 PM

I would use 5 30 Mobil 1 syn myself. I always follow the directions in the manual but I'm different

spuddy 04-04-2010 09:34 PM

I'm interested in how others think on this subject... I too am different.

People usually want the best for their vehicle but in reality they are looking after it for the next owner not themself. People rarely keep a vehicle longer than 5 years at most.

I have used Mobile 1 5W20 in all of my vehicles (since Mobile 1 came on the market) and I change the oil every 10,000 kms and I don't give a hoot what the manual says. I have never, EVER had any problem with any engine in any vehicle I've ever had.... and I've had many.

I've read all about the fuel economy vs wear publications and in some ways they re valid but in other ways they're not. They're simply an opinion, and in my own experience not supported, but that's just me.

In addition to fuel economy you can gain a tiny bit of extra HP by simply changing the oil to full synthetic and reducing the viscosity used. Dyno tests show a 10 to 12 HP increase. Not enough you'd feel much.

So, a tiny bit of HP gain, a tiny bit of fuel economy gain and MAYBE reduced engine life. The jury is still out on this... but do I care if I only keep the vehicle for 5 years??

Kaisoboy 04-04-2010 09:42 PM

Sounds like you have already made up your mined on this so why ask us? We only gave you our opinions for you to take or leave. It is up to you!

spuddy 04-04-2010 09:53 PM

No.. I haven't made up my mind as I may keep this car much longer than 5 years. It may be the last "toy" I get to own so I need to look after it. Thus my question on what others think. I'm simply saying what I have done previously. That's not an indication of the future.

I changed the oil for the first time 1 month ago on the snake and the odo has 1300 kms. By next Apr when I change it again the odo will have moved approx 700 kms to a total of 2000k's. For me with the limited k's I change it once per year and I'm comfortable with this.

Kaisoboy 04-05-2010 12:45 PM

Just remember it is not the oil that breaks down but the additives within the oil. So I run Mob 1 syn 5/20 and change the oil at 5000 km whether it needs it or not. Maybe over kill but I am a firm believer in the tried and true. I think though the real question is can/should he run 5/20 in a car that recommends 5/30.

Cheers

I would not but hey:chacha:

Kaisoboy 04-05-2010 04:37 PM

I would agree with you as well Snake.

Ray Spencer 04-08-2010 07:55 AM

I use Castrol Synethic Tech 5w-30w with a Ford oil filter. I was using Quaker State High RPM oil but Quaker State stopped making it last year. I looked after my mustang for me, there will be no other owner..period. If you want to improve your engine life change the fuel filter at least once a year. When I buy a 2011 next year the 2005 will be stored.

spuddy 04-10-2010 08:33 PM

I've always stayed away from Castrol. I have a report by Consumers Reports who tested many oils but couldn't get a contant sample from any Castrol oil as they don't actually make any oil, they just resell everyone else's oil. So in one sample you could be getting oil from differing sources all with varying specs.

At the risk of appearing disrepectful... I'm not trying to be... but if you drive so few kms why have the car?? A car is meant to be driven and enjoyed.

Why have the car is a good question and not to be disrespectful because I'm not but it goes like this. Mostly because I can I guess. My money (and the wife's) so I will spend it on anything I choose to I suppose. Other than that:chacha:

spuddy 04-11-2010 07:54 AM

Oops.. did I do a booboo..??? Sorry..

I usually go with what the vehicle manufacturer recommends. Its fine to want to perhaps mod the vehicle but oil is not something I am willing to play with. If you still have a manufacturers warranty on the vehicle or an extended service plan it might be adviseable to stick to the recommended oil.

Thanks Ray. I know some people buy their car to drive as much as possible and I'm fine with that, for me it's a Wed night car and the odd weekend show. I love going to a show with the Mustang guys here in Calgary finding some shade and sitting all day talking cars sports girls well everything. I drove for a living for 25 years so I do not find driving a great big thrill. Had I had an inside job maybe I would want to drive more but alas I did not. There are more people like me out there than most would guess.:tup

Kaisoboy 04-11-2010 11:33 PM

Ahhhh...sitting under a shady tree on a Wednesday night, shooting the shite with the guys...Doesn't get better than that on hump day!!!! CAN"T WAIT!!! Don't forget, Spring Thaw is this weekend on Sunday at DFM.

Kaisoboy 04-12-2010 01:13 PM

Hmmm....not sure. It is calling for rain on saturday but 16*C and sunny for Sunday. it is April and you know how that can change in a blink of an eye around here.

Apr-18, 2010 Spring Thaw 25th Annual Car Show Deerfoot Mall Calgary, Ab.

I guess I went the other way. I worked in a high stress IT job for 30 years then I left. I always said I wanted a no brainer job like driving a truck... boy was I wrong. I drove a dump trailer for a bit. An ugly Mack.. my surprise was the dust in the pits. I have ashma..!! Drove all kinds of trucker jobs... didn't like it. Left them all and then drove a highway coach for Coach Canada for a few years. Loved the job... hated the company. Now I drive a school bus for a great boss for 7.5 hours a day handling all special needs kids. THE BEST JOB I'VE EVER HAD.!!

The one thing I've discovered though is I love to drive... I can crawl into my new Steeda-Stang and drive the back roads for hours. Looking at farms, homes, cows, horses.. don't care what.... I find it relaxing. Mind you I'm not in the city so the driving is different. I hate the 401.. idiot street.

All to say this is why I was curious why you had such a cool car and only drove it 700kms a year... Can I borrow it....??? It needs love... I'll be kind..!!

As long as you bring it back as clean as when you picked it up. That would require a fresh wax job including the rims, under hood, trunk, door jambs, exhaust and wiping the undercarriage. If you need conformation as to the cleanliness ask Zeb951 and Kasioboy and I am quite sure they will verify my claim.:chacha:

spuddy 04-12-2010 07:23 PM

So I'll take that as a NO..!!!
