Just curious what everyone is running for oil in their rear end. Going to change mine tomorrow and just wondering what your using and how much i need ( never done it before). Also is there a drain plug, or do i need to take the cover off?

I run Vavoline Synthetic and you will need to take the cover off.

If you have posi make sure to add friction modifier.

 

see heres the big debate. to put friction modifyer in or not. i was told dont put it back in and the rear will lock up better. put it in and its a friction reducer that lets the clutch packs slip and sometimes no 2 wheel spin ? not sure how much truth in it , but it does make sense. mod reduce = slip. no mod reduce = lock up and fry both treads.

 

What year is your stang? It shouldnt matter but use Synthetic 80W90. Make sure its synthetic or you'll be changing it alot sooner than later. Ford recommends every 3,000kms when its not synthetic.

I used the Motomaster(Schell brand) last time. I change it every year or say 20,000kms.

I would use the friction modifier but if you dont, I'd say change the fluid regularily because friction creates heat, and heat kills oil. I'd still say use it, Ford recommends it for a reason.

 

I put 3 liters of royal purpal gear lube in mine with no friction modifier. Still working smooth.

 

Its a 90 coupe 5.0. Not sure what i need. Please let me know.

 

I'm pretty sure RP includes FM in the oil, so you don't need it.
3000kms? you must be kidding. it's usually more like 80k from what I was told. 80w90 or 75w140 will work fine though.
They put the FM in there to reduce potential clutch chatter on corners, so the clutches will properly disengage during cornering as one wheel is going slower than the other. IMO no FM will wear out the clutches prematurely.

 

i used 75-140 synthetic, with no modifier, haven't used modifier in years and have never had any issues.
