rear end gear change?

Question rear end gear change?

hi can anyone please tell me if it is possible to put an original 373 gear from a 2001 ford explorer to my 1989 mustang i want to change them real bad and i can get them for free he also said it was limited slip i know mine is posi i don't know if that makes any difference thanks

Ya you can use the gear but the trac-lock will require 31 spline axles.

what kind of axels should i get and where can i find them and they have to be 4 bolt pattern ?

You can get a 4 bolt 31 spline axle from Moser or Strange, or numerous other companies. It's a nice upgrade as the stock 28 spline axles have been known to break even on a bone stock 5.0

If you're getting the gears and posi unit (limited slip is what the ford trak-lok posi unit is btw) for free put that saved money towards the axles

Oh, and while the posi unit is out you might want to take the opportunity to repack it with extra clutches (a rebuild kit is cheap and you can use the out-side clutches as your extras as they don't really wear out. If you want I've got a link somewhere that will give you step by step instructions.

The gearset should bolt right in as long as it's from an 8.8, IMO you shouldn't need to upgrade to 31 spline unless you're running slicks and/or are making some decent power (350hp+), good luck Nick.
