Sound > Performance

Hey guys,

So I am sure this question has been discussed in much detail but I can never get another opinion on the issue. I have a 02 3.8L and have the stock single exhaust system. I want it to sound nice and deep rumble/throaty, yes I know its not going to sound like a V8 end of the day but there are some on utube that sounds pretty good. With out taking a third loan out on my house what would be the best setup to get the most consistent sound out of my mustang and not worrying too much on the performance end of things. I have heard that not to go with a catback system cuz they are restricting but the cheap way out to making you think you have duals. The other option is to leave the headers and cats and do a true dual system with a crossover and flowmaster 40 mufflers. I am leaning towards the second option so far from what I have heard. What do you guys recommend for the pony, I am a student with a budget and I don’t want to do the headers and stuff and play with the O2 sensors and CEL so that why I want to leave them in. Any suggestions for a good setup? Anyone know a good muffler shop here in Edmonton? How much should I be spending to make the second option to happen? Anyone have a sound clip with something similar to what I want to get? Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

If you can find someone with a GT "H" pipe, you can use that. then just choose your choice of cat back.

would be cheaper that way.

I had flowchambers(well flow something anyhow) on my 03 V6 and it sounded pretty good. (i also think it was a true dual setup)

Re: Exhaust

My muffler shop suggested that I also should not go with a catback system. He suggested to trim the y pipe from the cats and bolt on a true dual system with magnaflows. He stated with 2.25 pipes back it will give me the best increase in HP and help to increase the loss in backpressure that normally results from a catback system.

when i had my v6 i went to high flow cats an x-pipe and a 98 gt mac catback with 3.5" tips and it was 2.5" exhaust. it sounded awesome at full throttle. had alot of compliments and overkill can vouch it sounded good for a sixer, but i was also had a m90 for the 2.5". but i had the dual on before the m90 and my gas mileage soared with just the duel exhaust on. and apprently with a "stock" 3.8, 3.73 give ya better mielage as well

Power gains from exhaust changes to otherwise stock cars like ours are modest at best. The most worthwhile part, maybe 7 or 8 hp there.
