Question tire sizing on the rim

I want to go up from the stock 245 tire size to 275's. Although, I don't want to get new rims.

Stock rims are 17 x 8 and tires are 245/45/17, which most of you know.

What's the biggest tire I can go? I thought I could do 255's but that's not worth it. I got other people saying you can do 275's but I don't want to have any kind of issues at high speed or hard cornering with that combo. Does anyone have any technical details on this?

Also, someone else mentioned to me about getting my current rims widened. Is that for real, can you do that and who does it and how much would it cost? I have the stock aluminum rims.

You can go with any 275/40/17. note the profile of 40 not 45 on the 275's. this allows the 275 to be wider but still retain the 25.6 inch height of the 245/45/17's that come stock on the 03/04's. hope this helps. I have had and many in LAMC run the 275's and the cars get pushed with no problems on the rims or the tires. good luck with your choice.

I have an 01, which is a 17 x 8 inch rim at 245/45/17.
The 03/04's are 17 x 9 inch rim with 275/40/17.

I'm not sure if what you are saying was meant to be applied to my 8 inch rim or if you thought I have a 9 inch rim?

I have a 03 Mach 1 and the rims are 17 x 8. I run a 275/40/17 tire. We got mixed up with years and makes. I am talking about a 03/04 Mach and a GT not the Cobras. So that being said they would fit on your 01 car. They look good also.

Gerry,
275/40's will fit on 8 inch rims.
Irregardless of how many ppl run them.... (lemmings), some issues I googled:

1) Handling may be an issue due to the "balloon" effect, and the effectively softer sidewall.

2) If the tires aren't mounted on manufacturer's recommended sized rims warrantee can be refused.

3) As above, public or personal liability in the case of a tire / rim failure wouldn't be covered by the manufacturer or your ins. co.

Good things to note. Thanks for looking that up, haven't seen that and did not think of insurance type issues.
