Wheel Paint

Has anyone here painted their stock wheels? I'm looking at painting mine black but haven't ever done it. I see Duplicolor has a specific paint for it. Any feedback would be great.

take your time and tape everything off carefully

Taping won't be an issue as I am removing the tires and I'm painting the entire wheel. I'm not going to leave the lip in the silver finish as I am going for the blacked out look but I will take my time. I don't want runs or crap in the paint.

Way beyond my very small scope of expertise. Here's another thought...how about powder coating...not sure if you can actually do wheels.

Years ago my husband painted the rims on our van. He used the silver rim paint from Canadian Tire...I think it is the duplicolor brand. Looked great, no issues!! But....it was a van so it's not like we were concerned with show quality.

Here is some painted wheels for you.

I had the rims on the 6-er powdercoated. Powdercoat is strong and wont chip. Not sure I would trust paint to rims. BUT I've never tried it ... might work fine.

I thought about it but for the cost of it I could almost buy a set of knock off wheels. I'm just being cheap, plus I enjoy doing little thing like this my self. I have read a lot about powdercoating and some say it's safe while others say it isn't.

For the cost of it if the paint doesn't last forever I'm ok with that. For the mileage and use my car get's I'm thinking it would be ok.

Painted black GT rims looked great on my DHG Bullitt! I used them for the track only and the paint chipped a bit, but otherwise good.

Those do look good. I've got the Bullitt wheels but I've never seen them completely black including the lip, I think it will look ok.

I'm just not sure how well the plastidip will hold up. I can try it I guess.

thas wat i thought as well too.. but with further research i found out its really hard to chip and dosn't fade at all... it will hold up to the wheel until you take it off.

I just did some digging on it as well and I'm going to give it a try. It's a pretty easy process so what the heck. I found a few good tips like putting the lug nuts in the lug holes before painting them so that if you ever remove the wheels the paint won't tear.

Amonty 04-01-2012 11:10 AM

yea give it a try.. worst case u can juss simply peel it off its alot easier then powder coating, you dont even have to take the tire off the wheel..... upload some pics wen you have them done.... i will b doing mine as well later this month .. i'll post some of my pictures up as well.. hope it turns out nice :) goodluck!

I did my badges already and it turned out well so hopefully the wheels work out as well. Good luck on yours as well.
