Winter tires...

I have a 2012 V6 with Pony package. I've been trying to figure out what tires are the best for winter driving here in Alberta. A friend has some Bridgestone blizzak 235/50r18 on 09' Mustang rims. Will they fit my 12'?

Apocalypse Pony 09-01-2011 05:03 AM

Welcome to the site dude. Not sure what size tire you're running now, but the sizes have to be the same or slightly different or the speedo won't read right. As far as the rims go, not sure, but I'd say there's a good chance they'll fit. Worst come to worst, if it's your buddy thats got them, jack 'er up and swap one out on both front and rear - that should tell the tale right there. Good idea to go with the 'Zaks though, winter tires are a good idea.

Blizzaks are the best. You should be ok with that tire/wheel combo.

I've got some winters mounted on rims that I put together for my '07 and hardly used. If they don't go somewhere soon they're going to be used for smokeshows. They're Kumho I-ZEN WIS

I'm in Calgary. PM me if you're interested.

I don't see why they wouldn't fit. Blizzaks are awesome tires.

No problem to bolt those on the 2012. If the car has the performance package, you need at least 17" wheels to clear the brakes.

The only issue would be the TPMS if he put them in the 09 wheels ... the 2010-up cars use the valve stem type sensors rather than the band mount sensors that the earlier cars had.

You should throw up a classified dude, gotta be someone in your neck of the woods looking for a set. If not, smoke 'em if you got 'em, just make sure you do it two at a time and take some video. :tup :lol

Good info. I didn't even think of the TPMS, and didn't know they had changed the style of sensor.

We definitely have some knowledgeable members here and good luck with the snow tire hunt.

rojam43 09-02-2011 07:09 PM

I live in London, Ontario and everyone here is telling me not to run my 2012 V6 in the winter even with snow tires. Not sure what to believe but we had way too much snow for the Mustang last 2 years so snow tires wouldn't have made much difference.

SNAKEBITE 09-03-2011 12:58 AM

^^^I think London gets hammered every year lol

Apocalypse Pony 09-03-2011 05:04 PM

I don't get that - we live in Canada. Snow is a reality, what makes the Mustang any different from any other rear wheel drive car that used to be the norm 25 years ago?

fast Ed 09-03-2011 09:42 PM

Main problem that you might run in to is simply the ride height of the car. Deep unplowed roads can be an issue with the car almost floating on top of the snow. Used to get that the odd time with deep snow in my lowered T-Bird Super Coupe.

The rear wheel issue shouldn't be a big deal I agree - my first car was an 87 Chevette with RW drive. Never got stuck. The clearance would be an issue - last year we had two storms with snow up to the grill of my wife's Flex. Still looking for a beater of a truck to deal with that possibility.

SNAKEBITE 09-04-2011 10:22 AM

not fun being a snow plow

Apocalypse Pony 09-04-2011 03:11 PM

The snow get's that high it's time to have a hot toddy and curl up by the fire. lol

ChadStang 09-04-2011 04:25 PM

I don't think a Mustang has much less clearance than most cars really. I see alot of people running Focus' and Fusions and they don't really have any issues. There are also some people here who drive their Mustangs year round and we have no shortage of snow.

SNAKEBITE 09-04-2011 08:19 PM

If I had a 6 as a dd I would most certainly drive it in the winter. Keeping the dd clean in the slop is another story mind you.
