Noobie From Halifax

Hello, everyone. I own a 2002 Mustang GT, shes pretty much stock except an AEM Brute Force Intake and a Jegs 2.5" Catback exhaust. I've had the car for just over a year and I just love it. Shes in the body shop now because my sisters shed fell on it while I was storing it for the winter. My buddy has a Stage 2 SRT4 and hes too damn cocky and I want to kick him down a notch, what mods can I do that wont break the bank but still beat him, no nitrous please. I got some ideas but I want to know if Im on the right track. Im thinking and handheld tuner(and brands to stay away from?) 3:73 gears. Headers and Xpipe. And probably TB and plenum. Oh and I may change out my mufflers from the turbo style to a more straight though design. Oh and he is on the stock 205 tires. and I have the stock 245s. I just want to shut him up on how "fast" his SRT is, or how he calls it the "Silver Bullet" lol. Thanks all

If getting 3.73's go ford racing and have them professionally installed.
TB get a BBK. Headers and X pipe BBK makes a nice cheap set.
Your gonna want H/C/I and maybe even a power adder possibly a turbo or a blower.

Welcome aboard.

You are need to need an aweful lot of $$$ in bolt on parts to do the job imo as stated above.
You store the car winters so it is not a daily driver then. Why not go with 4.10 gears instead of 3.73?

The million dollar question though is can he drive?..........and can you?
Anything can be beat stock for stock depending on the driver.
Just by focusing more on suspension and launches might be all it will take.

MustangMan02 12-25-2008 10:33 PM

I know I can out drive him. And I can launch the Stang pretty good. 4:10s would be nice but I dont want to rev too high on the highway, and since Im taking in the Florida come the Summer, I dont want TERRIBLE fuel economy lol. His car isnt that fast, at least to me it doesnt. I know its faster then my Stang. Thanks for the Welcomes, and will post pics of my baby once shes out of the paint booth

fox5 12-25-2008 10:51 PM

get him from a dig with gears and sticky tires... and shut down early... lol

welcome to the site btw...

The Don 12-26-2008 09:01 PM

Welcome to the CMOC community! Good luck with modifing the Stang and the future race against your buddy and his SRT4

MustangMan02 12-26-2008 09:03 PM

Thanks I will need it. Does it sound like I even have a shot?

fox5 12-28-2008 07:31 AM

a mopar performance stage 2 SRT-4 will have around 280whp and 300tq at the wheels....

they weigh 2900lbs without a driver... i'm confident you can beat him on the launch, but the rest of it depends on your mods...

MustangMan02 12-28-2008 12:46 PM

yeah in order to beat that I would have to put down close to 400rwhp, or mid 300s and one hell of a good launch lol. Well we will see

Welcome from Cape Breton, and enjoy the site. Lloyd

MustangMan02 01-05-2009 08:41 PM

Thanks Lloyd. I was just in Sydney today in the Syndport Intustrial Park. Come the summer time I may take a road trip up there and drive the Island. Cape Breton is a beautiful place

BLWN281 01-05-2009 11:36 PM

I would suggest 4:10 gears they are great and if you are really concerned about the rpms, i just went to saskatoon from winnipeg this summer w/ my uncle. He has 4:10 gears in his 2004 Mach 1 and he had better gas mileage and low rpms than me and i still have stock 3.27's i believe. honestly i think personally the best way to go (for bolt ons) is first and formost intake and exhaust. even just putting on better mufflers if you can't afford headers and mid pipe make a huge diff. I just put Mac long tube ceramic coated headers and prochamber on my 03 gt and it made a huge difference. as for tuners id say SCT or Diablo, but getting a dyno tune and advice from a shop will tell you more because they can go more detail into how the car runs, and etc. And for my last advice if your gonna buy something and the difference is 100 dollars to the better stuff wait the whatever it will take to save that up and purchase the better stuff don't cheap out and buy something that is second best(if your gonna be driving it hard). Personally id rather wait and get what you know you want and what will do best for your car. if any of that helps great if not and have any questions ask ill give you the best knowlegde i can later

BLWN281 01-05-2009 11:41 PM

as well a short throw shifter will help you get through the gears a little faster and take some time off your shift only a few secs can make the difference and get you a better jump start and they are cheap only a couple hundred :) something to consider

MustangMan02 01-05-2009 11:55 PM

Yeah, Ive got an AEM intake and Jegs 2.5" catback. Im working at doing the Xpipe, and headers, gears and tune all at the same time, I need to get better tires, right now Im on 245/45/17 Bridgestone Brizzaks lol, not the best for dragging lol. Thanks for the advice, I think I will go with 4:10s as well

BLWN281 01-06-2009 12:02 AM

im putting on 305/35/18's on my rear what size of rims do you have?? you should get a drag radial tires, really sticky and soft, don't last long but are great. What kind of headers were you thinking of?

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 12:06 AM

I have the stock 17" Bullitts. Im looking into a DR tire but tire shops around here have a hard tire getting them, then charge and arm and a leg for them. As far has headers go, Im not too sure. How hard are LTs to install? Are they well worth the money and effort over shortys?

BLWN281 01-06-2009 12:12 AM

big time worth the effort and money way better horse power gains espically with our cars like the engine we have, they are a bit much to install ill start a thread with pics of the install on here so you can see you have to take the whole K member out. it's the easiest and fastest way to do it. but is hard took us about 8 hrs to install, mid pipe included, as for your tires check online you might be able to find some cheap from the states and if you order soon might have for spring, tirerack.com is not bad.

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 12:13 AM

ok thanks. Will shp around for tires, what size would you recomend?

BLWN281 01-06-2009 12:22 AM

bigger the better but it all depends on the width of your rim wider rims can hold wider tires i have 10" rims and even putting 305's on are a pain and risky im prolly safer with 295 but i know 305 will fit

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 12:25 AM

I think the stockers are 7 wide? I know 275s will fit so I may go with that

BLWN281 01-06-2009 12:27 AM

when i bought my rims they had 275's all around and looked great id say go with that on the rear if you can fit it doesn't nessarly need to be that on the front but if you did it would make it easier for tire rotations :)

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 12:30 AM

Yeah I would probably just put the 275s on the back for now, and keep the 245s on the front since they are pretty much brand new

BLWN281 01-06-2009 01:04 AM

That would be your smartest bet i would think

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 01:08 AM

yeah, then when the 245s go bald then i can go wider. lol.

BLWN281 01-06-2009 01:17 AM

dont really need to be too much wider in the front im putting on 275's on the front and 305's on the rear to give it that offset and it looks good for ride hieght plus any bigger in the front and im sure it would rub

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 01:23 AM

yeah. I think you can put 285s on the front, but I think its would be pointless to have that wide of tire on the front

BLWN281 01-06-2009 01:25 AM

true that anyways im crashing i work early hopefully i helped out a bit ttyl

MustangMan02 01-06-2009 01:28 AM

you surely did, later dude

You won't be disappointed with the drive around the island. The Cabot Trail is a great trip. Take care, Lloyd

Welcome aboard.I wouldn't recommend anything lower then a 4.10 gear out back with the 4.6L.
I have done both, and wished i saved my money, and done it right the first time round!!
With the above mods, and 4.10's with drag radials, you will be golden to wup is ars!!:tup
