rear end oil suggestions
Looking for a recommendation for rear axle lube. Currently getting some chatter when going around corners.

Before you go to the trouble of changing the fluid, maybe try put in a bottle of the Ford friction modifier. That is the additive for the fibre material in the Traction-Lok clutch packs. Grabby clutches is usually what causes the chattering, and it can sometimes be cured by dumping in a 4 ounce bottle of the additive. Motorcraft number CXL-3, $5.27 + tax at your local dealer.
If that doesn't fix it, replace the fluid with some good synthetic product, with a bottle of the friction modifier added. cheers Ed |
X2 on the friction modifier. I've seen several chatters fixed with just that.
Yes Friction Modifier will likely do the trick. I can't remember the brand I used on my truck, but I purchased it at Bumper-to-Bumper, and imo it worked better than the modifier I purchased from the Ford dealership.
Thanks for the updates.

X 100 for friction modifier. I used the stuff from the Ford Dealership when I upgraded the diff. in the 6-er. Inexpensive and did the job perfect.
The official Ford stuff is the best on the market. I have been using it in all makes of limited slip diffs for years. I use Amsoil gear lube, and when I installed my 8.8 last year, I decided to try their "slip-lok" additive as well...not as good. When the rear end is hot, I still get a bit of clutch chatter. I know if I had used the Ford additive, I would not hear this.
Oh, don't get any on 'ya... That stuff is bar none the stinkiest automotive fluid out there, and it doesn't wash away easily. |
what causes chatter, age use or????
Haha Roddy you got that right on the smell
Not that I am an expert but I always use Ford fluids when/where possible.
^^^ You can't go wrong really. I've got all Royal Purple Synthetic in mine (minus the Friction Modifier of course). After the fact, I've heard Royal Purple Diff oil isn't the best - but I don't remember why. I'll let you know if that's true this coming season - haven't really driven the Mustang since the new diff. oil went in.
Another way to go is to use Redline Gear Oil, as it comes with 5% slip modifier already in it, which should be enough. If you use too much friction modifier, you're basically defeating the purpose of the LSD.
how often should this fluid be changed, mileage or years?
^ I think Ford 75w140 synthetic is good for 7yrs 150,000 km. I wouldn't let it go that long though.
5 yrs and 5000 kilometres is alright?^^^

^^^ Good tip. Most cars never see the oil changed .... Not good.
^ yep and even with low usage engine oil gets changed in the fall when I park the car and in the spring when I take it out. The most over looked fluids though are brake fluid and coolant.
I will have all the fluids changed out this spring if I still have the car
Had mine all switched over to Mobil 1 full synthetic the day I picked her up:tup
Wow I just thought of this and am surprised no one else has what about KY Jelly bwah
^ haha leave it to Snakebite to come up with that
