V6 rear end...3.73 or 4.10 ?

Hey all. I've been reading the posts on gears.
I didn't see an answer for my question, so here goes...

what is the stock ratio on the 2006 w auto tranny?

I have a '06 Pony ragtop w auto tranny. love the ride!!
I do find the pick up a little "lazy" so am contemplating the 3.73? or maybe 4.10? want to get a quicker 0-60 yo know?

Yes hiway run she will get currently 28-30 mpg (Canadian)...no biggie though as I'm not over concerned with that aspect. didn't exactly get a Mustang for the fuel economy LOL

also, I have TCS (traction control system) so do I still go for posi? T/L ?

I am looking at parts from Amercian Muscle (Motiv gears) as I've had some good results from their stuff and great customer service...in other words trust.

I already have a flash tuner so I'll be able to correct my speedo I think.

back in my youth I had a mopar Duster my altered rea-end and it was a rocket!

appreciate some input....thanks

3.73 - manual transmission
4.10 - automatic transmission

just my 2 cents

roddy 07-10-2011 03:10 PM

+1, what he said. Go 4.10s. A posi/T-Lok/LSD (whatever term you want to use) will be a good idea. The stock ratio is 3.31.

ChadStang 07-10-2011 05:10 PM

+2 on the 4.10 for the auto

-PLOTNIK- 07-10-2011 07:45 PM

iv got 3.73 and a ford racing t lok, and i love it

Either the 3:73's or the 4:10's will be much better than the 3:31's you have in there now.

I went with the 4:10's and found my launch time much better (getting steady 1.9's on the strip at 60') so I would not go backwards to a 3:73 or a 3:55.

SNAKEBITE 07-11-2011 05:01 PM

hell go 4.56 lol

kena 07-11-2011 08:43 PM

Well the 4:56 requires a notched cross shaft so 4:30's would be much cheaper and easier to do. I have a set of 4:30's if you are interested.

thunderbolt 07-11-2011 08:59 PM

seems to be a split decision here...

keep in mind we're talking auto tranny.

SNAKEBITE 07-12-2011 05:21 PM

let us know

so..umm.. I'm confused
you suggestted 4.10 for me, but you also think 3.73's are good?
At the moment I'm leaning towards 3.73, but still pondering and reading. :wiggle:

kena 07-12-2011 08:37 PM

Either are better than your 3:31's but I lean to the 4:10.

ChadStang 07-12-2011 10:05 PM

I went 4.10 in my 04 GT auto and I was glad I chose them over 3.73. They worked great.

SNAKEBITE 07-13-2011 02:31 PM

Do not 4.10's make 1st gear so very short?

thunderbolt 07-18-2011 06:45 PM

ok. I think I've decided to go with 4.10's

now, back to the posi / traction lok thing...what's the difference between this and the stock TCS (traction control system) already on the car? little button on the dash to turn on / off

shoulds I also be consdiering changing out my axles to aluminum? or is that just a fancy option not really needed. Obviously, 4'10's are gonna generate higher rpm so what else may be messed up by the change ? as previously staed, I have an SCT flash tuner sholud cure the speedo issue

I plan to have install done by local transmission shop..ie Mr Transmission likely

TCS is electronic and gains traction by limiting rpm so it is not ideal in for performance, more so for snow/wet conditions. Unless you are putting major power down your stock axles should be fine. You will be fine with the 4.10 as long as you use your sct to set the speedo up, everything else should be ok.

thunderbolt 07-19-2011 06:08 PM

ok thanks for the input guys. appreciate it.
I'll be ordering soon
Tomorrow I get my new rims / tires on eeh haa

rampant racing 07-19-2011 10:46 PM

i have a used posi and 3.73 gear in very good condition for a 7.5 rearend if you are interested.didn't use it long as i switched to a 8.8 when i got the supercharger.i also have the cast rearend cover/girdle aswell.$300.00 for the lot +shipping.i am in sarnia.

I am no mechanic obviously but does T/C not also work in conjunction with ABS?

rampant racing 07-20-2011 12:04 PM

traction control has nothing to do with the rear end or gears it is for winter or slippery conditions and has to do with the brakes.btw there is no such thing as ALUMINUM axles.if i were you i would get a used 8.8 and skip the headache with the stock rear.you can even get them with 3.73's installed already from the factory.i went the v6 beefed up route and it was ok till i started making big power then it was time to switch to the 8.8.there is not much difference in price by the time you buy all the parts and have someone else do the install.don't waste your time.unless you are going to race this thing alot the 4.10's are really not needed.imho

thunderbolt 07-20-2011 06:36 PM

Thanks for the offer..but I think I'm gonna go with the 4.10

go with the 4.10's if you wish but at least put them in a 8.8.the 7.5 is junk and a waste of money.i just ordered a set of 4.10's twenty minutes ago for my 8.8.then again i race it all the time and need to spin it up to keep it at 15psi boost at the top end of the track.

SNAKEBITE 07-21-2011 05:13 PM

rampant are you saying that t/c has nothing to do with abs or am I reading you reply wrong, sorry I have add

traction control won't let your motor rev if it senses a tire spinning.also it will apply brakes and power to where and when it sees fit to do so.it is connected to the abs if you have it.

roddy 07-23-2011 06:14 AM

Good choice, going with the 4.10s. I did a rear end swap for another member here, and he went with 4.10s on his '06 V6/auto. He came back from his first drive with an ear to ear grin.

Monera96 07-24-2011 04:07 AM

3,73 if your a daily driver
4.10 if u plan on racing all the time
4.10 make gear 1 completely useless and 2 almost useless

rampant racing 07-26-2011 09:28 PM

good luck with the install man.i hope it's a quiet one.

rampant racing 07-26-2011 09:35 PM

did you go with the motive gears or something better?not trying to be rude but they are known for being noisy.

rampant racing 07-28-2011 12:08 PM

well what's the news on the gear install? good i hope.your probably out enjoying the xtra ooomph.

thunderbolt 07-28-2011 07:01 PM

gears are in...definitely an improvement over stock 3.31
lots of go power from a standing start
we got some gear whine going on, but not irritating at all...tech figures it may go away after a break-in period
motiv 4.10 + Ford trak lok + aluminum cover

next is to re:calibrate speedometer with my SCT tuner...speedo off by about 20k

rampant racing 07-28-2011 07:23 PM

i hope it goes away for you ,mine never did.got any pics of your car,it looks pretty sweet.are you going to the mustang car show in wingham in august?i might go up to check it out.

Good news. As far as hearing gear whine, that just means you need louder exhaust. :tup

LOL maybe!!
I actually don't mind the whine so much.

got the tuner out and reclaibrated my 4.10's + added the Bama tune
she's got some get up and go now for sure!

did a 50 mile run over to my daughter's place and back...got some vibration going on...at 60 mph. need to take a ride without the wife to see if it goes away at higher speed.

I assume there is some sort of "break in period" for the gear set...any suggestiions? around town, she's a rocket.
