Chips & Tuners

Going to pick up a chip or tuner

Wondering what everones opinion is on which is the best bang for your buck...(superchips, Diablo, SCT???) etc

What do you reccommend?

Mustang Performance Parts & Upgrades by Brenspeed

I have the SCT X2 with a MAC Cold Air Induction Kit on my 05 Mustang. Very please with it. Now Brenspeed has a more improved tuner called an SCT X3 for newer mustang models 2008-2010. You send them your PCM code (each mustang has a different code) on your engine computer along with any upgrades you have done such as (exhaust) and Brenspeed programs the tuner for your specific vehicle.

I think they are all relatively priced the same.

Depends on what your usage is for. A chip is hard coded and the parameters can not be changed. A handheld gives you the option to adjust, datalog and if you change tire size or gear size it allows you to adjust to that. There are a lot more adjustments on handhelds but those are a few.
As for brand of handheld SCT or Diablo and I would go with what is availble in your area. If there are a lot of SCT tuners buy that one and same goes for Diablo.
The most cost effective is the chip.

You also have to decided if you do go the handheld route if you are getting a dyno tune or buying the tuner with the programs in them. One is a mass produced tune and the other is a hopefully qualified tuner that adjusts the paramters of your car while on the dyno.
If you have lots of mods I would suggest a dyno tune and if you do not think you would be making any changes to the tune or major mods in the future I would get a chip. If cost is not an issue get a handheld as the adjustability is awesome to have.

Hey my 04 GT stick is chipped and it made a big difference. "My Guy" who is the service manager at the dealership i used to work at is amazing... he as an 03 GT and pretty much has done the same stuff to his Car as he has done to mine... if its good for the goose its good for the gander!

Either way i am sure you are pointing yourself in the right direction for some more hp, good luck and keep us posted.

On a side note, i got my fuel filter changed and injectors flushed and it made a huge performance difference.... make sure you are up on your maintenance as well!

Where is the fuel filter located on the 99-04's?
Am I able to change it myself?

I think I will be going with a handheld for now as I plan on adding some toys ver the next couple years...Right now I have the catback and intake...I will be changing the gears, TB, Plenum, Midpipe, and several years down the road, hopefully a supercharger, but that wont be for a while...

I have no idea where the fuel filter is, my buddy did it... I would assume its near the gas tank, just follow the line.... you should be able to do it yourself... they can't be hard... just need the right tools and something to plug the fuel line?

The fuel filter is under the car in front of the gas tank and is accessible.
It's not a hard do it yourself but you need to relieve the fuel pressure from the line (unless you like gas spraying all over the place).

To relieve the pressure:
-the fuel pump switch (aka fuel inertia switch) has to be disconnected. It is located in the trunk and is by the tail light on the driver side. The carpet usually comes up to cover it. Depending on the year the carpeted plastic housing that covers the rear of the tail lights may cover it as well.

-unplug the inertia switch electrical connector and then start the car and let it run until it dies (5 seconds to 10 minutes).

-the pressure is now relieved so have at the fuel filter replacement job.

-when finished plug the inertia switch back in and push the reset button on the top of it to be sure it didn't pop. Engine will start but have someone looking under the car for a fuel leak from the new filter. If no leak you are all set.....go have a beer and be proud of yourself..
