Which one, Turbo or Supercharger?
I am planning for next years mods and would like some input on which people would prefer for a 4.6 SOHC.
I have riden in a 5.0l with a paxton a few years back as well as an older cobra with a vortex supercharger and I am familar with how they felt. The only turbo car I was in was when I test drove a sunbird with a 4 banger turbo and it felt like a power band kicking in. This is what I am starting with 4.6L SOHC stock internals Underdrive pulleys Accufab TB and Plenum Bassani Catted X Pipe Magnaflow Cat back Steeda CAI SCT Programmer The questions I have How much can the stock engine handle? Cost difference? Emmisions? How much can the stock clutch and tranny withstand? Twin turbo or single? Twin screw or centifugal supercharger? Should I forget power adders, pull the engine and rebuilt with stonger components before thinking of power adders? I am sure some of you have riden in different cars with different power adders so some of you can kick in and let me know which you though was kick A$$ as far as fun factor. |
what do you really want out of it? whats a long term goal, track or street?

Car will see the track 2 times a year. Mainly street driven. Looking for something different but looking for any input as to pro's con's on superchargers or turbos with people that have had experience with either or both. Just looking for opinions on how far I can go with my current setup, I don't want to head in the wrong direction. |
You can check out STS and their rear mounted turbo kits. Saves on all the hot exhaust under the hood.
I have had a few FWD turbo cars and I'm building a single turbo for the race car, so I got to say I love the turbo. FREE HP rockon: |

There must be more of a lag with the turbo further back? |
Well, as you know Warren and I are doing the Procharger setup, and Ill give you my 2 cents.
I wish I would have saved a little bit more to get a KB, and say good bye to your UDP's and I hope you have alot of money! Turbo im not sure. Keith |
I'm not really familiar on their kits, but they do say the lag is vary little. Also there is no need for a IC cuz the air gets cooled down by the time it gets to the front.
I think I'll read over their website. coffee: |
Id screw it, its always there right when you need it. I love turbos but as the size increases so does the lag, off the line lag isnt bad at all, its cornering. what kind of power were you thinking. I know that the STS works but I dont buy the no-lag, Id love to try one to see though
|
Well It does not look like the 99 to 04 mustang is very popular for turbos. I went to the STS site and they do not offer it for those years same goes for turbo-kits.com
Does anyone know any other sites. |
I would like to say if you want all out power the turbo is the way, don`t worry about lag with todays turbo`s you won`t have any but two down sides are heat and cost. I would never have another car that didn`t have one. If you want a web site check out turbomustangs.com or where I bought my kit from HP performace http://www.turbochargedpower.com/ my car is in the customer cars link
|
Which kit did you get and did you install it yourself?
|
Turbo more efficient. But for Daily Driver, I think I would take a Blower....IMO

When you have a boosted applicaion you need a IC engine love the cold air just common sence!
Besides who in there right mind wants to share there engine oil with there HOT SuperCharger, there was no way I was going to tap into my oil pan I would get either KB but if its out of you price range id get a cent. blower that if SC "Self Contained" so you dont have to share your engine oil. If the engine blows the S/Cer wont be sucking up bad oil from a pooched engine or vise versa. Hope this helps Tony Keith |
I'm a little late to the game but for me it's a loud blowerthumb:

either one get the job done

Supercharger for low end, on the ball power. Turbo for insane top end power.
|
the sts rear mount turbos dont have turbo lag at all they actually have less then a traditional turbo beacause they all have a remote system, they kick in instantly and are ridiculously quick if you get the twins and then you also can get rid of mufflers and straightpipe back from the x cause the turbos will quiet the car down enough they are jsut a lot more expensive then a supercharger kit. even the hellion turbo kits are more expensive then most supercharger kits and that a single turbonetics 62mm turbo and all the fuel system upgrades.
i would go with a supercharger. i prefer centrifical, prochargers are way nice but paxtons and vortechs are a lot cheaper and still give lots of power |
For the price and up keep ( new rods, new tranny and new rear end ) of a turbo would be too much for a once and a while track car. IF you dont plan on upgrading everything to handle to Tq and HP that a turbo will make than your going to eventually have a pretty expensive paper weight. Most reliable turbo systems can put out 460 Tq and thats going to cause problems to a stock tranny.
I purchased my Centri...P1SC blower and installed it with the recommended 8 psi and got a conservative,,, very conservative tune and it still made about 370 rwhp and TQ. And trust me you noticed over 100rwp gain!! The whine of the Centri, especailly procharger at idle is a head turner at lights, especially if you pull up to other performance cars that know what a blower sounds like. A positive displacement blower would be fun, that instant Tq that kicks in would create a fun street car. Ive been in a kenne bell mustang and the sound they make at WOT screams. Howver the price of a KB is going to run you a few more than a procharger. Both systems either procharger, vortech or paxton would give you more than enough reliable power for your goals. A twin screw like KB would be ideal though for the street car. |
Supercharger is nice. You get to retain most of your current setup, relocate some items and use a belt. Instant tq (which can also be done with turbos).
Superchargers are fairly low maintenance and the technology has been applied to hundreds of mustangs in the past, tried and proven track record. Turbo kits are cheap these days but not nearly as cheap as a blower setup. It just seems easier to bolt on a blower. I have ran both in the past and I am happy to say that i am pleased to stick with the blower setup :) Mind you, on ebay the twin turbo kits are cheap! $1000 |
The only bad thing is that a blower ROBS HP witch Turbo it's all free HP.
So instead of making 500HP you would make like 580-600hp with the same amount of boost |
I love the sound of a loud blower. and i am stick with the blower.
