speakers change/upgrade

I plan on changing the speakers in my car this weekend. I want to change the 2 rears and the 2 doors but leave the shaker 500 subs in the doors. I currently just have the shaker 500 and don't plan to upgrade it. I am just changing the rear speakers because they have had a rattle since I got the car and it's getting worse and annoying.

I guess my question is, with just having the shaker 500, is it beneficial to change the speakers all around? would it make much of an improvement in sound or is just changing the rear speakers fine enough since i won't get a difference?

the place I am going to suggested using JL Audio speakers...
does anyone have any thoughts, comments, reviews of JL Audio speakers?

any other suggestions to go with the shaker 500 system?

comments and suggestions please

You wouldn't notice a quality improvement replacing only the rears, you'd just be eliminating the rattling you described. For an improvement in quality replace all of them, and there certainly will be an improvement.

I'm not familiar with the front speaker setup in the s197, is there a tweeter, 6.5" and a shaker sub in the door?

Also, I have no personal experience with JL, but I have not heard bad things specifically.

thanks for the reply... i will replace all 4 then...

the doors are 5 x 7's just like the rears...
don't think there are tweeters..

maybe someone with a shaker 500 in an 06 can confirm this?

Isn't there a tweeter pod up in the front corner of the door glass? Like in the Mach460 system.

Also, if possible, get reducer plates and put 6.5" round speakers in the front instead of 5x7s, long story about audio, but they will produce better sound. And yes, and 6.5" will fit even though it's only 5" wide.

I don't believe there's subs in the front doors, just the mid range, which you'd be replacing if you got a new JL component setup.

You can stick with 5x7s in the rear for cost reasons, as they're essentially just for fill sound, but if you're looking to be more serious, change those to 6.5s as well.

I am not seeing any tweeters in the front dash/door area unless I am missing them...

the shaker 500 system has the speakers on each door and the sub just below it... I didn't plan on replacing those because they are fine and the front speakers sound fine but I just figured it would be better to replace them all around (except the door subs). I will ask about the 6.5"'s in the door..

here is a pic of the shaker 500 door panel

Hmmmm, ok, maybe they're coaxial 5x7s up front and not component setups, will have to wait for an s197 audio guy to comment on that.

But then yea, you're on the right track, I don't know how the front speakers are amped, if there's a discrete channel for the mid and high, and one for the sub. If there isn't a discrete channel, will have to watch out for impedance issues replacing the mid/high drivers. Otherwise, should be fine.

Replacing speakers and keeping stock amps/HU can be a bitch sometimes

No problem man.

The day I bought my 99, I had the stereo on for 5 minutes and immediately turned it off, it was un-listen-to-able. Got home that day, began rewiring the entire car, I have over 100 hours in my stereo install, and it's just amazing (at least I think so ).

PS: DUNCAN HILLS COFFEE RULES!
