Sylvania Silver Star High Performance Bulbs

Just doing some reading at other forums about these replacement lights.

"Sylvania Silver Stars are the closest you can get to the look of HID High Intensity Discharge headlights without the cost of HID"

Anyone running these in your headlights? Are they any good, better?
They must be brighter than stock. Canadian Tire has them for the Mustangs for 28.95 a piece.

What ya think? or what about HID lights, how costly are they?

Khaine 01-26-2005 04:26 PM

for a set of HIDs you'd be looking at a couple hundred dollars....

just make sure you don't violate : No motor vehicle shall carry on the front thereof more than four lighted lamps that project a beam having an intensity of over 300 candela. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (9).

BlueGT 01-26-2005 06:02 PM

I was wondering the same question as well. I'm not a big fan of HID's but I think these bulbs will be a slight improvement over stock.

cobracory 01-26-2005 07:26 PM

For the price, you can't go wrong with the SilverStars.

I put them into my Cobra last year... a direct replacement bulb from the stock one... does hi & lo beam. I believe they run a couple watts higher than stock but I haven't had any problem. Took about 5 minutes to do the install.

I paid $24.99/ea from Canadian Tire for them recently - put them in my daily driver. Just make sure you find out the proper model number of bulb you need.

Thanks for the info, probally pick some up real soon. cheers

I had them in my 99 too but they dont make a fog light bulb..and makes it look awkward IMO as you have bright whites up top and dull fogs...
my 0.02

I ended up putting some eurolites in that come in bright white and they make a fog lamp bulb as well. will be doing the same on the 04 come spring.

I put the silverstars in my Mach1 this past summer. Much whiter light. Brighter as well. Great improvement at night!

Worth the money I think.

Canadian Tire says they do. they did not have any on the shelf when I was in but she said she could check out back, I said no as I did not need them right today. Here is the part number. 2003 FORD Mustang

High & low beam headlamp
9007LL
9007ST Silverstar High Performance Halogen Upgrade

Fog/Driving light
893

Note: I did not say they have them the counter person told me they did, So check it out if ya like.

I agree on the differant shades if driving lights and fogs look differant. Heard that the fogs burn out quick. Hope not true. May be because of handling them without gloves or something. cheers.

BIZ 01-27-2005 11:56 AM

thanks man...will stop by there this aft!!!

spidartanks 01-27-2005 06:08 PM

I had eurolites in my cavalier and the lights was aweful. stock bulbs lit the road up way more. the colour was nice though.

if silverstars are available for foglights for the gt's then i will be buying them for sure.

Cool, you ordered them at the auto parts counter at crappy tire?

Do you have the bulb or part # for our cars headlights (2002)
My cars stored so I cant open up the headlight to check the #

I think there something like 9002???

Cdn Tire has them, for stangs it is bulb number 9007 for the h/l beam silverstar lights. They stock the headlights but do not stock the fog lights. I ordered the fogs, once they come in I will be picking up all four and can give you the Cdn Tire Part num than. They will ask you 6 cyl or 8 cyl anyway as the lights are all behind the parts counter at this store anyway.

Good luck.

MUSTANG GUY 02-02-2005 05:54 PM

Sounds good man, I will drop by the crappy tire here near work if I get a chance today, if not I will go tomorrow and pick up the headlight bulbs and order the fogs.

Thanx

gfong 02-03-2005 07:48 PM

Guess what, someone was correct and it was not Canadain Tire. No fog lights for silverstars. They ordered regular halogens for me. They called today and said they were in. I went down after work and she brought them out. Disapointed, she says hey these are notthe ones I ordered for you? I thought okay mistake, nope no silverstars yet for the Fog's.

Sorry guys. Anothe blunder by Canadian Tire. :(

They do have the high/low beams for our cars, and I have seen them.

Any other suggestions on the fogs????

JEFFOS69 02-03-2005 09:51 PM

Just get another brand superwhite (like apc crap) they should be a decent match it will just get rid of the yellowish colour.

Silvertars are better than stock but nothing can beat true HID's - every car I will own will have HID's in them.

MUSTANG GUY 02-03-2005 11:38 PM

last year I bought super white fog lights for my car at Pacific Mall but the shitty thing was one burnt out after about 2 months.

I will buy a pair this year for the fogs either at Pacific Mall again or Performance Improvments, I dont deal with P.I cuz there prices are crazy but Im pretty sure they can get the fog light bulbs if you ask them to order it.

gfong 02-15-2005 10:42 PM

I got 2 of the Silverstars for the headlights now ready to go in. Still need fog lights, anyone got part numbers and names of company that I can get a brighter fog light since Silverstar does not make them? Thanks.

pacific mall at kennedy and steeles will have it. Just bring your stock one, walk around a couple of the rice stores there and you will find a pair. Thats what I did last year.

gfong 02-15-2005 11:00 PM

Thanks man, guess I will hit the phone book tomorrow and find some tuner spots in London to see if they have any.

I thought I read that they do make a fog light for our cars

I'm interested to hear what your opinion is on them :tup

P.Meister 02-16-2005 12:40 AM

If you want, we can order these for you!

lol Yea I am the one who said they did from advice from person at the Cdn tire auto parts counter. lol
She ordered them in and they were just stock halogen. She checked again and found out that Silverstars fog lights for our cars.

Some use an older silverstar (The 893 SilverStarĀ® High Performance Halogen headlight is used in vehicles as a fog light (maximum 37.5W)).
but they will not last, maybe 2 months.

Our replacement for the stang for fog lights is #899. Our headlights are 9007ST. I emailed Silverstar to find out and will post thier answer.

Just passing on what I have read and heard.

Steeda: hang ten! waiting on email for ST.

BIZ 02-17-2005 07:46 AM

I got an e-mail back from Silver Star....no bulb avail for the fog at this time...lmfao....although the part number is right....they dont have the bulb :banghead:

I ran into this same thing last summer...

eurolites make a "brite white" light and they do have a fog.

so all 4 lights will match....had them on the 99

Barry @ Performance Unlimited can get them 519-453-4307

looks like thats the route I'm going with the 04 unless somone can find the silverstar fogs....

gfong 02-17-2005 08:37 AM

The part number that seems to be going around is 893, the actual part number is 899.

Cdn tire does have the 893 silver stars, but I cannot find out what car they are for? If I could use them and if they burn out could return as you have a year warrenty? Savey!

I read about eurolites, sounds like they do not last long at all. With buying them from a speed shop like you mentioned only a 30 day warrenty. Not good.

Will look around their has to be a bigger store that has a warrenty on them. Thanks for the onfo.

BIZ 02-17-2005 12:18 PM

once you find out let me know...the Cobra uses the same bulbs for the fog as Gt/Mach and same headlamp...I would love to go with 4....in no hurry.

The eurolites lasted me 2 yrs with no problem on the 99...but I know what you mean. :tup

Hey no problem... information is free!

Got this in my email a bit ago form Sylvania.

Hi Greg,
The automotive lamp replacement guide indicates that your Mustang uses the 899 for the fog light. I can't recommend that you use anything different than what the owners manual states. It is possible that the 893ST wouldn't last that long due to different operating voltages and wattage between the two bulb types.

Customer Service
OSRAM SYLVANIA

I had asked why they are not making a fog for us and as you can see they did not address the question. Here was my email to them.

Message from greg:
Hi, I see that you do not have a fog light replacement for a newer mustang part#899. I have a 2003 Mustang.
I have heard that if I use part #893st they will only last me 2 months approx.
Can I safely use these in my fogs? Curious why no 977 for mustangs and other cars? I already use your 9007st in the headlamps. Awaiting your response. Thank you.

Please respond to this request via email.

My quest continues.... "Quest for fog's", film at 11.00 :)

03GreyMach1 03-02-2005 06:27 AM

I remember reading a while back that putting a higher output bulb in the fogs will melt the housing... can't take the extra heat and they will burn out quick.

Can't find where I read this but take it for what it's worth.

Im going to be picking up the super white fog light bulbs for my car in the next month or earlier, If any of you guys want a set let me know and I will see if I can get more than one.

I think I paid something like $25-35 last year.

They didnt melt or effect the fog light lense or anything although once one burnt out after about 2 months, but the first pair I had lasted me the whole summer.
