I have a pretty good idea...but, need to know how to adjust the timing on my 1970 Ford 302. I already have the harmonic balancer marked in white for TDC and a new timing gun. Now what???

 

You should just have to attach the clip over #1 plug wire, and hook up the power on your timing gun, and I believe its 10* your aiming for....

 

Sounds easy enough...I have all the original shop manuals for the car, and it is stock...so I'll just go by what they suggest. Thanks

 

The tools you need to work on your ignition system are not too complicated.

 

Disconnect the vacuum advance hose at the distributor and cap the hose THEN set the timing. The rotor turns counterclockwise in the distributor. Turning the dist. body clockwise advances timing, counterclockwise retards it. Good luck!

 

certain tools are required to do so. At the very least, you need a wrench to loosen and adjust the distributor; and a timing light in order to see how the timing is set.

I know many use a timing light and vacuum gauge to time their engines.

I use my ear. I keep advancing my timing until I hear my engine ping when driven heard then I back the timing off a bit.

This puts your timing right at the ragged edge and is the optimal for your engine.
