Any S197 4.0 people here?

There doesn't seem to be much for the 4.0 cars here...we should change that...start postin'! I've got a torch red '07 coupe with a few minor mods. (for now, C&L intake, JBA headers, GT take-off exhaust and swaybars, X-CAL2 tuner(with tune from Doug @ BAMACHIPS), Hotpart lower control arms, and 3.73 gears with an Auburn carrier.
Anyone else "playing" with a 4 litre?

I bought the tuner from DaSilva Racing in Pickering, and got them to unlock it, then later ordered the 93 torque, and 93 race tunes from Doug at Bamachips. I was very impressed with the tunes, and with Doug's customer service. You get a lot of improvement for your $50, and he is quick to send you the tune via e-mail. The best tune is a dyno tune, I just haven't got around to it yet. I should reserve some dyno time with DaSilva Racing in the spring. I don't remember for sure, but I think the tuner was around $500 CDN at the time. The C&L listed for $299 U.S.. Matt at DaSilva sold me one for $305 CDN last year, and that was before the dollar went up to match the US dollar!

Welcome. I have a torch red 05 with 275/40/18 Michelin Pilots on 18x10 Roush rims, lowered via Steeda, Steeda short throw tri-ax, tint, Flowmaster 40, painted stripe job, K&N filter. My only problem is I feel slighted in this thread cause mine is an 8, oh well. I forgot lots of polish/wax :laughhard

Personally, I have no experience with shops in the Ottawa area, but have had good luck dealing with DaSilva Racing in Pickering (905-837-7700). For a couple of examples, I got both my Hurst shifter, and my Auburn LSD there. In both cases, they were not in stock, so I called around and found both at Karbelt, though the price there was a little high. Karbelt is fairly big and sells to other shops, so I called Matt at DaSilva and told him I found the parts at Karbelt, and if he could match the price, I'd buy the parts. He not only matched it, he beat their price, got the parts from them, and had the parts there by the time I drove up from Belleville.

Regarding tunes, as stated above, Doug at Bamachips Knows the 4.0 very well and has a lot of experience tuning them. His mail order tunes work very well and with a CAI will really wake up your car.

The stock V6 muffler is a cork...very restrictive. A cheap and easy install is to replace it with a stock GT take-off muffler. They sound good and you can get them for next to nothing.

thanks for the tips.. much appreciated...
my girl friend lives in trenton.. sometime when i'm up there i'll have to make the extra distance to pickering..

as for Bamachips... where are they located?

i was also thinking of getting the FRPP pack w/ the exhaust and CAI... i am assuming it will need to be tuned.. would it be the same tune i'd get from bamachips?

i'm new to all this so im just trying to get an idea :)
all help is appreciated.

roddy 01-13-2009 07:16 PM

bamachips.com is located in Jasper Alabama. Doug sends tunes via e-mail for XCT and , I believe Diablo hand held tuners. I bought my tuner locally and gave my specifics to bamachips, then got the tune I wanted for $50.

The FRPP dual exhaust kit is a nice piece. As for the intake, I would consider a good quality aftermarket one, such as a C&L or Demolet/Tunable Induction. I don't think that the ford "tuner" will have anywhere near as much adjust-ability or support as one of the popular performance ones.

...just my 2 cents

roddy 01-14-2009 06:24 AM

I've done a couple more mods since my original post...

Hurst shifter - looks good, nice solid feel, but it is noisy (internal rattle/buzz-a common complaint with the S197 V6 model). If I could do it again, I would spend the extra coin and get an MGW shifter instead.

Aluminum drive shaft- Shaftmasters 4" unit...10 lbs (!) lighter than the stock one, and a much better design.

(E-)mail order tune- bamachips 93 race tune. I previously had the 93 torque tune, and got good results vs the stock calibration (better throttle response with no lag, and better "pull" down low--great for in town driving). The race tune is noticeably different. The throttle response is phenomenal, the engine pulls harder from the bottom to the redline, and, for the first time since buying the car, when I get off the gas--I actually feel deceleration like I would if it wasn't a drive-by-wire system :chacha:. Nice!

Welcome to the site! I plan on going forced induction, as well. So far, I am leaning towards the Explorer Express Roots (Eaton M-90) type blower, as I like the sound, and "right now" response of a positive displacement supercharger. I am also tempted by Powerhouse Automotive's single intercooled turbo system. There are a surprising number of options for the 4.0 V6. Vortech/paxton, Procharger, and STS all have kits for the V6.

Oh, man that sucks! I hope it works out in your favour. As for pics, I'm not likely to be posting too many...My lousy 28.8 (at best) dial-up makes posting pics an exercise in futility.

Magnaflow dual exhaust, exterior/interior cosmetics, and I lined the entire car with Dynamat sound-proofing. Now the only thing i can hear inside is my own exhaust sound. :tup

very nice ride...
loving the interior..

Nice! and welcome to the site.

oldyeller 01-23-2009 10:47 AM

Turbo, hmmmm, haven't really checked into that as yet. We just bought a house in Kelowna so may have too hold off on the toys for a bit to let the bank account recover. Has anyone done any cost comps. super charger vs turbo?? May have to chip it for the summer, and hope for the blower in the winter.
Can anyone give me tips on how to post pictures on this??

oldyeller...I've looked into this a bit, and most superchargers for the 4.0 seem to be in the $3500 to $4500US range, and the GOOD turbo kits seem to be around $4500 and up. One example of a supercharger can be found at explorerexpress.com, and an example of one of the intercooled turbo kits is at powerhouse411.com. There are lots of others out there but these are 2 of the best. As for pics. with my 28.8 dial up, I don't even bother. Sorry I can't help.

dethklok81...that is one of my fave colours for the S197 Mustangs.

Hey everbody, I have a 2005 V6 with 18"Cobra rims and a magnaflow dual exhaust.

my only complaint is the muffler notesound great if you are outside the car but inside, esp on highway, it has no 'rasp' and is just a sort of droning hum.

any comments?

roddy 01-26-2009 06:30 AM

Welcome to the site. The only things I cam think of to get rid of drone would be to try either a new set of mufflers (such as FRPP GT-B bullitt mufflers, or Corsa--Big $), add a set of resonators before the mufflers, or add Dynamat to your trunk floor. You would be best off talking with someone who has that setup on their car to see if they have noticed the same issue. There is a member here with that system on a V6. I think his user name is Ray Spencer.
