Need transmission
 

I am wondering if any one could help me. I have a 1978 replica of a 1951 mgtd the t 4 transmission has had it. We think the motor is a 2.3 v 6. I can't get parts for motor so I found a 2.8 to replace it and now I need transmission. Can anyone tell me of a manual trans.that will bolt directly or one that will work with some minor changes like bell housing and if so what vehicle would I be looking for

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a 5-speed from a ford ranger/bronco II/explorer. The 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 are all from the same engine family, and the parts may work together. I'm not sure of overall length, shifter location, or clutch actuation compared to yours, but it gives you a place to start looking.

Oh... If you can find a 4-speed from a 74-78 Mustang II, or a '79 Mustang with a 2.8, that might be just what the doctor ordered. Personally, if the 5-speed doesn't involve a whole lot of fabrication, I'd go that way.

You are spot on roddy about the 74 to 78 mustang with 2.8. Here is what I have found out please correct me if I'm wrong. Anybody
74 to 78 mustang had a 2.8 with t4. If only I could find one it would bolt right up
My 2.8 is out of a 1985 bronco. They dumbed up the 4whd if you only wanted 2whd so this won't work for me (puts the shifter back too far )
82 to 85 ranger 2whd had a t4 or t5 not world class that's would be fine for me.I'm
Not building a ra rod. but even harder to find than a mustang 2.8
85 and up had much better t5s but 2.8 changed to 2.9 and then to the 4.0
Now here is where I'm lost. I think the t5 from say 85 to early 90,s will work and are easier to find but I need to change the bell housing to one from a 2.8 whoops back to square one

So the million dollar question is will the t5 trany and bell housing fit on a 2.8

As I stated above, the 2.8,2.9, and 4.0 are all from the same engine family (Cologne V6). I would think that the bell housing would physically bolt up. I'm not sure of overall length, shifter location, or if the clutch actuation is hydraulic or cable. I did a quick search and came up with a thread on another mustang forum regarding a similar project. There are some links there that may help (if you haven't seen it already)...

Hey roddy I phoned reg brown auto wreckers yesterday all he would say is I have no idea. Shouldn't have told him I was in bc I guess. Followed some other links as well. Thanks for the info but I keep coming up with same thing every one says ford transmissions are interchangeable most notably 2.8 2.9 4.0 but i already picked up one from a guy from a 93 ranger 2.3 and it wasn't even close to fitting this is a 4 cylinder of coarse but I thought I could just change bell housing but after I cleaned it up I realalized it is one piece and after researching ford transmissions a lot of them are one piece. So till not clear what vehicle or transmission I should be looking for
