Need transmission

I am wondering if any one could help me. I have a 1978 replica of a 1951 mgtd the t 4 transmission has had it. We think the motor is a 2.3 v 6. I can't get parts for motor so I found a 2.8 to replace it and now I need transmission. Can anyone tell me of a manual trans.that will bolt directly or one that will work with some minor changes like bell housing and if so what vehicle would I be looking for
Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is a 5-speed from a ford ranger/bronco II/explorer. The 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 are all from the same engine family, and the parts may work together. I'm not sure of overall length, shifter location, or clutch actuation compared to yours, but it gives you a place to start looking.

Oh... If you can find a 4-speed from a 74-78 Mustang II, or a '79 Mustang with a 2.8, that might be just what the doctor ordered. Personally, if the 5-speed doesn't involve a whole lot of fabrication, I'd go that way.

better for the wallet re saving gas

You are spot on roddy about the 74 to 78 mustang with 2.8. Here is what I have found out please correct me if I'm wrong. Anybody
74 to 78 mustang had a 2.8 with t4. If only I could find one it would bolt right up
My 2.8 is out of a 1985 bronco. They dumbed up the 4whd if you only wanted 2whd so this won't work for me (puts the shifter back too far )
82 to 85 ranger 2whd had a t4 or t5 not world class that's would be fine for me.I'm
Not building a ra rod. but even harder to find than a mustang 2.8
85 and up had much better t5s but 2.8 changed to 2.9 and then to the 4.0
Now here is where I'm lost. I think the t5 from say 85 to early 90,s will work and are easier to find but I need to change the bell housing to one from a 2.8 whoops back to square one
Now I know what guys on these forums mean when they quote THE DIZZY Is--------
So the million dollar question is will the t5 trany and bell housing fit on a 2.8

roddy 03-19-2012 05:46 AM

As I stated above, the 2.8,2.9, and 4.0 are all from the same engine family (Cologne V6). I would think that the bell housing would physically bolt up. I'm not sure of overall length, shifter location, or if the clutch actuation is hydraulic or cable. I did a quick search and came up with a thread on another mustang forum regarding a similar project. There are some links there that may help (if you haven't seen it already)...

Reg Brown auto wreckers in Campbellford/Hastings ON has a lot of old Ford stuff, and may be able to help. I realize you're in BC, but they may be able to point you in the right direction... 1-705-696-2900.

Hey roddy I phoned reg brown auto wreckers yesterday all he would say is I have no idea. Shouldn't have told him I was in bc I guess. Followed some other links as well. Thanks for the info but I keep coming up with same thing every one says ford transmissions are interchangeable most notably 2.8 2.9 4.0 but i already picked up one from a guy from a 93 ranger 2.3 and it wasn't even close to fitting this is a 4 cylinder of coarse but I thought I could just change bell housing but after I cleaned it up I realalized it is one piece and after researching ford transmissions a lot of them are one piece. So till not clear what vehicle or transmission I should be looking for

Snakebite whose fast Ed and what do have under the hood. We bought and 08 mustang ordered it with all the bells and whistles except motor v6 it's my wife's car she loves it and so does my youngest son who is 17. Me I like it but but even if I close my eyes its not the same as the 70 boss I had when I was young I still remember exactly how I felt behind the wheel of that car I loved it just ask my wife she was my girlfriend then she says I loved that car more than her and I tell her she's still here and all that is left of car is great memories

SNAKEBITE 03-20-2012 10:34 AM

FastEd is our tech guru and my car has a 5.4 s/c motor 500hp at the crank

roddy 03-20-2012 06:37 PM

Sorry Browns wasn't able to help you out. I'll look around and see if I can find any solutions. What is the current set-up for the clutch (cable or linkage)? Can you take some measurements form your existing transmission? Overall length (with and w/o bellhousing), shifter location and trans mount location (from where the trans and bellhousing mate)?

roddy 03-20-2012 07:40 PM

The following links may or may not be useful, but I'll toss 'em out there:

http://www.mustangii.com/manual_trans_codes.asp
http://www.mustangii.net/forums/default.asp
http://www.triumphspitfire.com/schwartz.html

And when you get it up and running:

There's a wrecker near me that has stuff dating back a long way. I don't remember seeing any manual Mustang IIs or Ford Capris in his yard, but I'll give him a shout tomorrow and pick his brain.

Hey roddy this is turning to be a full time job. Really appreciated. Thanks man

Tops off 03-21-2012 09:58 AM

Roddy car is in storage and transmission is really hard to see its up in tunnel with sheild over bottom but I will bring car jack their tonight and get what I can

SNAKEBITE 03-21-2012 03:10 PM

that will help the guru's

roddy 03-21-2012 06:10 PM

Called Randy today... He's got a couple of old school buses full of transmissions to look through. Said he'd give me a shout if he comes up with anything, and I'll pass along any info I get.

SNAKEBITE 03-25-2012 04:16 AM

you are very helpful, thanks and +1

roddy 03-26-2012 05:40 AM

Thanks for the + Snakebite, but it's not much help if it doesn't end in a solution. When Tops off can get some measurements or casting/part numbers, that may make things a little easier.

Tops off 03-26-2012 10:06 AM

I know I will get them today. 2 year job coming to an end. Trying to tie up loose ends. Some times work gets in the way

roddy 03-26-2012 06:53 PM

I hear you there.

Tops off 03-26-2012 09:56 PM

The set up I have now is hydraulic at pedal then external clutch slave cylinder. I know pre 85 mustangs had external clutch slave cylinder. The measurements of trans.in car now are 24-bell to shifter.6 inch bell. Trans hidden after trans.mount but c4 trans which I'm sure thi is are about 29 inches long so sounds about right. The best info I have found on this is in the tech section on the ranger station site which it states I can use a t5 from a 2.9 if I use the bell from a 2.8 mustang. I was just hoping to confirm this before I buy any more parts.
I am also thinking of going ahead and pull motor and trans. Then I would know better what I'm looking for. This is what I'm hopping the bell in the car now will let me bolt the t5 on. If not then I half to keep looking for a mustang bell

Tops off 03-31-2012 10:50 AM

Thanks roddy for your help. You where spot on the trans from all v 6 family work together. I found a 89 ranger for sale close by missing 2.9 engine. Picture showed trans. sitting in back of truck. Contacted guy only to find out I knew him. He let me take trans home and it did fit. He phoned last night and decided to part out truck so he sold me trans for $150 Problem solved. Info for further use. M50D-R1 (Mazda built )5 seed trans.for 2.9 fits 2.8 2.9 4.0 but same model trans. M50D-R1 from a 2.3 will not fit. The bell housings are not remove able. If you put them side by side they look the same except bolt patterns do not line up on bell. The two top bolts are a dead give away v-6 are approx.4.5 a part and 2.3 i4 are approx. 5.5 a part. Fly wheel bolt pattern is also different. Thanks again

By the way roddy we had a couple that lived on are street for two summers Great people Moved back to PEI so if u ever run into don & Cindy mcCabe Russ & Sherry say hi

roddy 04-02-2012 07:31 PM

Awesome. I was thinking a 2WD 2.9 Ranger or bronco II would be pretty near to what you want, but I couldn't find the measurements to back it up. Good to hear.

I'm in Prince Edward, and technically speaking, it is an island, but it is not THE Prince Edward Island. Rather, a County in Ontario...that little piece of land that sticks out into the Eastern end of Lake Ontario. I get that a lot, lol.

SNAKEBITE 04-02-2012 07:44 PM

glad to hear it has worked out congrats

roddy 04-03-2012 05:37 AM

No problem. I wish I could have done more. Please post some pics when you get the car out. It sounds like a cool little machine. One of my customers has a '46 TC.

Looks good :tup

roddy 04-03-2012 07:49 PM

Cool. A 2.8 should push a light little car like that quite nicely. The 5-speed will make it more fun too. Is that your Mustang in the rear view?

Tops off 04-04-2012 12:26 AM

It's my wife's mustang
