MSD coil packs

just wondering if it is worth it? for 140 US shipped
i have a line on a set of coils with 8.5 wires (which i dont need)

Worth it if you plan on doing future upgrades like a power adder, otherwise on a stock engine, wou won't notice any diff. but a lighter wallet.

well everyone dreams of power adders in the future...
im the same way.
so i might as well by stuff little by little.

i bought them.

so my next question is.
when i put them on, do i used the 8.5mm wires that come with, or leave on my 9mm ford ones?

They should have the same connectors as stock and you should be able to use your current wires.

At what point (with power adder) do you need to upgrade your coil packs? How far can the stock 4v ones go?

I would use the 9mm wires you already have, the MSD coils should be a direct-replacement and have the same terminals as your stockers.

I have never had a problem with stock coil packs, the only time they should need to be replaced is if you're running huge (40+lb/hr) injectors or if they're damaged. I've personally seen at least 2 guys running blown Cobras using stock coils and running 11s on them.

Well I'm running 42#ers... I guess I should probably look into these.

Do you have an a/f guage? Since you're dumping that much fuel into the cyl, I'd say the more spark the better.

A wideband is in the works but it is being tuned using one on a dyno. Worked out an issue that I was having (bypass valve was destroyed) and I will be redynoing it on Sunday.

another reason i bought these was because, i still think my car is lacking something, so i upgraded wires, and it made a difference with it idles and runs.

i notice sometimes when i winding out gears, that i hear a wierd noise.
its not rythmatic, but like small poping...
that is why im changing stuff.

never hurts to upgrade ..right :2:

Does yours have a small stumble at idle? I can really notice it with the flowmasters... I tried my brother's coil packs and it has the same thing. New plugs, wires and different coil packs... not sure what it could be. Did it stock, does it now with a 'few' mods...

no not really. idles smooth now since new wires..
when i took off teh old ones, i notice a small crack/cut in the wire.

it only stumbles when it is cold and i hit the 3250 mark when the butterfly valves open :1:

That would be your IMRCs sticking. I took my intake apart when doing the injectors and cleaned them. No more stick. :thumb1:

i have cleaned them three time since i bought it last year.
once with seafoam, and twice with breaking the intake down, and hand scrubing them.
once the car is warm, it is fine. :2:

Ever replace the controller?

no, i went to the dealship once to check into it.

it was some stupid price, amd he said tehy had never sold one.
so we figured they were never an issue... :1:

Ponyryd 08-21-2006 01:49 PM

Mine had the same condition, only at idle though, really noticeable cold through the side-exit Borlas, nothing performance wise, pulled strong to redline. I was gonna change the original wires, but sold it before I got the chance, it also had those ghey Bosch +4 plugs, which may have contributed to the problem.

White97 08-21-2006 01:50 PM

I've heard that you should replace the controller when doing the cleaning but I didn't...

Where did you find the coils for that price with wires?

MSD-8241 right?

part #8241

yes that is the one.
i got it off a guy from SVT forums.
said it only had 100 miles on it.

White97 08-21-2006 02:59 PM

Ah ok, used, makes sense. Best I could find was $73.88 US per coil...
I may order these soon, going to pick my shocks and struts up on Saturday probably...

Thanks for the heads up, PM'd him. Can save me money for the subframes. :thumb1:

ahahahhaha it's the same guy I bought my injectors from. He said they were "brand new" but I got them and they were dirty. I knew the name sounded familiar. Wonder if he remembers me bitching him out.... haha

White97 08-21-2006 03:29 PM

Heh yeah. I like the price but his definition of "brand new" is a little fucked up.

Here's the "brand new" injectors I bought...
