Anyone do a rear disk conversion?
 
Anyone do a rear disk conversion on there car? im thinking of the baer 12" 5-lug system. suggestions or comments?

are you into autocross? if no the drum brakes work plenty good IMO. you can also get nearly as many rims in 4 bolt patterns as 5 bolt so that shouldn't be a consideration.....go fast first and then slow down :tup

I have the Baer 12" conversion on my car, in 4-lug, though it should be identical other than the rotors.

When mine was done (I didn't install it) one of the mounting plates had be ground a couple thousands of an inch to fit properly as the piece that the plate mounts to wasn't exactly flat. A proportioning valve is neccessary, and I went with a Master Cylinder upgrade at the same time as well.

I love the kit though, the calipers are very light which saves unsprung weight, and the stopping power is great. I did wear through my pads after a very short lifespan, however I'm sure that's because I using a street pad on a race track. Rotor wear has been non-existent, and that's good, because rotors are damn expensive. It uses parts from corvettes/f-bodies so parts are easier to get (except rotors)

upgrading the brakes on the stang is by far the best mod i have ever done. not only does it look good with a better selection of wheels, but the difference in braking performance is night and day.

factory brakes on my 91 were less than stellar. faded all the time and braking was pretty bad.

I am running dual piston pbr's up front and rear lincoln vii brakes. braking is much better now. (also did the MC, PV and booster aswell. i still need to get the adj pv on though).

im going to roadrace it...i got brembo 13" 4 piston on the fronts now. i have converted the fronts to sn95 spindles, hubs, ect, and i am running 2000 cobra r 17x9 inch rims. as far as going fast, it runs 12.7 at 111mph naturally asperated 331ci stroker...and thats with rock hard DECH springs and koni yellows, so for now that part is ok.... :)

i got brembo 4 pistons with 13" rotors on the front with sn95 spindles, and 17x9 cobra r rims, thats why i need 5 lug for the rear. The 12" baer rear system seems to be a nice set...from what i have read.... the installation doesn't matter to me, im going to install them my self (im a licenced tech at a VW dealership). do you know if the 5 lug kits come with new axels and do you know if the rear pads and rotors are also from a 'vett? thanks,

The 5-lug kits do not come with axles. With the exception of the rotors, the 4-lug and 5-lug kits are identical, so the pads for the 5-lug are also off a '90 corvette. I'm not sure about the rotors for the 5-lugs, there may be an OEM that has rotors that size.

What series do you plan on racing in?

none really, the engine has been done for 5 years now and the car has been siting for the same amount. i did a Porsche trackday (free because of my work :biggrin: ) and my girlfriends brother just got an 2005 STi. The trackday made me all exited about roadracing and the brother takes his sti to the track, (and keeps asking me when im ganna go) so im going to put a little money into the rear brakes and then i can go racing :chacha:

What about using the SN95 Cobra 11.65" brakes? Could be put together for less money, and you don't have to worry about getting a replacement rotor drilled for the 5 on 4.5" pattern (if you were to trash the Baer rotor, which is a 12" Corvette piece drilled for 4.5" circle). I doubt that there would be much, if any, difference in braking capacity. The only real advantage I can think of would be the lighter weight of the aluminium caliper with the Baer system.

im thinking of doing that because i went to performance improvments to day and they want $1150 plus tax for the 12" rear brake kit...seems like a lot. im going see what it will cost me if i get it from ford part by part...for anyone that is intrested in better brakes check out this site http://www.sn95brakes.com/

They charge only $110 for a 1 day event and offer a racing driving school every spring that includes two days of schooling + 1 free event day for only $395. (last years price)

If you're going to do the rear disc setup, go with the SN95 Cobra rear setup and spend the money you're saving on a set of 31 spline axles and carrier. You will most likely have to roll the lip on the rear quarter panels thanks to the SN95 rear axle width combined with the 17x9 wheel. Get your hands on an appropriate master cylinder and booster, Fast Ed should be able to point you in the right direction as he's the Ford Parts Guru.

I dont want the sn95 axels, they are too long for the 9 inch wide wheels. i got aerostar axles from a junkyard ....they are the same size as the fox axles, but in 5 bolt. i dont drag race, so i dont need the 31 splines. im going to get a 1 1/8" master. im going to leave the fox booster for now, but if i dont like the feel, im going to get a sn95 V6 booster. ford racing sells a cobra rear caliper set. i found brakets that will let me run fox axels with sn95 cobra calipers. if anyone is intrested in swaping to rear disks, check out sn95brakes.com it will answer all your questions.

I'm just using the 95 rear brakes on my 89 drag car only.
Using brackets from http://www.northcobras.com/index.html They only space the wheels out 1/4 inch more each side.
These brackets will also work with C-clip eliminators.
