Cam

What would be the best choice of cam for my 1989 Lx 5.0? I would like some more power in the upper rpm range 3-5000. And a little rougher idle, kinda like the old muscle cars if you know what i mean, kinda choppy. Its only a stock 5.0, I was also looking into other upgrades, cheaper preferably as i am a full time student, but also work 40 hours a week still.

A custom cam would be best, but the Ford Racing letter cams are decent for the price, if you need an emission legal cam, go with an E-303, sounds great and give more top-end power. You will of course be limited by the stock intake and heads and they should be changed first.

Installing a cam without any other modifications will offer minimal gains.
I always recommend doing H/C/I at the same time.

Bang on! The heads flow like crap and the stock intake flows even worse. There are a number of VERY fast cars that sound COMPLETELY stock because they did heads and intake and left in the stock cam Of course there are guys that stuck a big-*** cam in a stock engine and the car got slower. Why? Because the engine is trying to breathe through a straw!!!

A cam upgrade is normally the LAST item you do when you are doing up an engine, so it can be matched to all the other supporting components.
