Punching the cats out was a silly thing I did in my younger days back in 93 a couple of months after buying the car.

I want to enjoy a weekend drive in the stang again now that my kids are old enough to appreciate a cruise in "their fast car that's asleep in the garage" and my wife has been dying take it for a spin again.

Thank you all for your replies and advice. It looks like I will have to replace the H pipe...hmmm...flowmasters at the same time...

Regards, Why?

^Did you punch all 4? the fronts are hard to get to, unless you cut the pipe or the cat. With the front cats alone-you should be able to pass.................

Hi Ponyryd, appreciate your feedback. All 4 are completely cleaned out and I remember the front being a challenge.

It's possible to pass without them.

My E-test on my '87 with no cats, by-passed pollution pump (it seized), timing at 4 degrees and Ultra 94 in it:

But look how close it was. For a car that would never need another E-test at the time, I wasn't concerned. But you will always need to have that car E-tested, so putting cats on it may not be a bad idea.

Yep, that engine was always healthy. It's the same one that is now sitting in the Capri.
