Checking timing

So i think the previous owner of the stang had to much timing and now with all the mods its pinging under WOT. if i want to turn down the timing to i rotate the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise? Im looking for 12° of timing and i think the guy had it close to 15°.

It's been a while for me,but i believe its counter. If you are using a timing light,it would be easy to figure out.

you know, ive done, full suspension work, top end, brakes, taken off every accessory and all brackets, but the thing i can't seem to understand/wrap my head around is how to check timing. Funny how something so trivial is confusing to me. Maybe once i do it........ Anyways thanks for the reply, a quick google check confirms CCW to remove some timing. Also i think having such advanced timing is making my car run hotter.

The reference point is at the pointer above the hole in the pic.
