Coolant leak

How do you determine if the headgasket or lower intake is leaking. It's leaking internaly smoking white out the pipe. Intake was just swapped. So how do I figure this one out guys ?They were not siliconed down around the water passages. Fixing for a friend. I did not install it but he told me. The thing only seems to smoke when it gets hot. I am thinking the coolant pressure is building up leaking into one of the intake ports???? If it was the headgasket would it not smoke all the time ??? Pulled the intake off tonight no real signs of a leak, gasket ripped apart when pulled off. ?????

Sounds like the intake wasn't installed correctly. HG's would smoke constantly.
