Hey guys, just wondering if it's necessary for me to change out the stock EMS for another in my '86 EFI Cobra in order to do some of the heavier modding; i.e. s/c, cylinder heads, etc. I have been told that the stock ECU won't be able to handle a lot of things because '86 was the first year for EFI.
It all depends what your goals are.
Myself, I like to take the factory crap, and max it as far as I can get it.
That said, you could add some ported or alum heads [TWs will fit a flat top 86 car] 1.6 roller rokers, 70 mm TB, headers etc, then just buy an adjustable regulator, and add some fuel pressure in on the stock injectors. At stock pressures they can support a little over 300 HP, more with fuel pressure added.
When I had my notchback, I ran 12.50 @ 108 MPH with afr 165s, stock cam, stock rockers, stock shortblock, and an eddie intake and 65 mm TB. Added 1.7 rockers and it went 12.30 @ 111 MPH. I see no reason why a speed density EEC wouldnt tolerate a stock cam and 1.7 RRs as you aren't touching duration... And I have seen a 86 GT Vert with a bult motor, running MAF BUT a stock maf with 19 lbers trap 110.7 MPH so they potential is there fuel wise with stock injectors to go low 12s.
Point is with a little creativity you can haul *** with the stock speed density, just that you'll be stuck on the stock injs, and unless you get a set of 24s or 30s and a dyno tune w/ chip re burn. Don't be so quick to give it up, unless you have huge goals from the get go..
