Guzzling Gas

So .. now that the car is back together.. I am gettin the worse gas consumption...

I know it's not a Honda!! :laughhard (wouldn't want it to be!!)

But for a tank of gas, i'm only getting around 200k..

You can smell that it's really rich, I think one my my o2 sensors are gone, any other idea's? the check engine light is on.. just haven't looked into it.. any tips or somewhere I can get it looked at to figure out the code?

what did you have taken apart???

Have the car scanned...

MustangJay 05-18-2005 08:37 AM

i converted my car from auto to stick..

Different computer, but came from same year of a stock mustang.

the check engine light started to come on once in a while last year, so i don't think it has to do with changing the computer. I did bend one of the o2 sensors, that's what's leading me to them needing to be replaced.

do you guys know anyone locally that could do a computer read for me?

White97 05-18-2005 09:06 AM

PartSource does it for free.

a50snake 05-18-2005 09:30 AM

Partsource,

as in the one that is an extension of Canadian Tire? They do computer scans for free...

COOL!!!! :tup :tup :tup :tup :tup

Thanks for the info,
A50snake

White97 05-18-2005 09:52 AM

Yep, saw it on a sign out front. I have my own OBD-II scanner so I've never had to use them though.

a50snake 05-18-2005 10:14 AM

Cool,

Ya I have a cavalier, '88 Z24, and I found out that I can just use a jumper wire to get the trouble codes off of the computer. anyone know of a way we can do this with '87-93 models, mine is an '87.

Thanks,
A50snake

Jay, perhaps a tune would make the car run better, get better mileage and get more power.

Something to consider :)

MustangJay 05-19-2005 01:18 PM

yeah, i think she is over due..

i'll take it to partsource today and see if they can tell me why the check engine light is on

i'll keep ya's posted

Stang6589 05-19-2005 01:45 PM

I think replacing the 02 sensors would do the trick aswell.
Have they ever been changed??? Cause they usally need changing after 60,000 kms

As far as I know the only way is to disconnect the battery for about 10 mins.

MustangJay 05-19-2005 09:56 PM

thanks for the suggestions..

So I got the car plugged in today to find the error code..

Came back that it wasn't getting any info from my Mass Air Sensor, And the o2's..

Tried pricing a Mass Air Sensor? Damm Ford is expensive! Partsource can't get one till tuesday as it has to come from the states and the price from them was 110, Ford which can have one for me tomorrow wants 300ish (can't remember the exact price, just that it's over 300).

suggestion given to me from ford, since the guy knew that i just converted it over from auto to stick showing i can do a little under the hood. said to take it apart and let it soak, so i did, plus delicatly cleaned it as well.

Now.. Not running 100%, more like 90% .. Fuel consumption is back to a normal amount.

SO I went and bought the o2 sensors as I believe they might still be orginal.

I'll let ya's know how it is after I change them.

I wanted my car to be reasonable on gas again, since i'm heading to montreal saturday and coming back sunday night some point. (anyone here from Montreal?)

MustangJay 05-20-2005 07:04 PM

have changed the o2's now..

So.. after this weekend i'll know for sure .. But it does seem to not be guzzling like it was :tup

White97 05-20-2005 08:52 PM

Post the change when you find out, that's probably what mine needs, I bet they're the original 11 year old ones as well...

MustangJay 05-23-2005 12:06 PM

what a difference..

I'm sure she could still use a good tune up, which i'll get around to soon.

But she was good on gas this weekend, especially on the highway. (sorry can't remember the k's, but at lease twice what i was getting)

There is a good burnout video coming, so stay tuned for that.. (watching too much car tv shows this morning! LOL)

I got a chance to finally push the stang, after getting the min k's for the new clutch. WHAT a difference this car is now with becoming standard. A lot more of driving pleasure that's for sure. :chacha:

White97 05-23-2005 02:04 PM

I was waiting to do my whole exhaust to put the new O2s in but I think you convinced me to put them in as soon as it stops friggen raining!

MustangJay 05-23-2005 02:33 PM

your car looks as the same age, might be more depending on how many k's you have on your car

I just learnt that they should be changed every 60,000k's .. My car doesn't have high k at all (101,ish) ..

they are something in your car that won't hurt to change, but do you know for sure if you need them?

you can get your car plugged in and have a computer check done to find out if yours are responding. They aren't a cheap item and kinda a pain to change with your h-pipe in place.

to get my out easier, i just broke the old ones so they were just a nut. with a wrench, you just can't get the leverage you need, thus with breaking them, i heated them up a little and put a socket on there. MUCH easier, as with the wrench i wasn't getting any luck, and was looking like it was going to strip the bolt.

You can do it with a voltmeter, but a simple code scanners for an 87 is dirt cheap at CT.

a50snake 05-25-2005 02:47 PM

Are they really that cheap?

I always thought they were like $50+? But maybe that is cheap to some, just not me...I'm cheap...  ...I guess I should have been more precise in my last post, my goal isn't to get the codes off the computer, but rather retrieve them. The jumper wire trick makes the SES light flash a certain amount of times for each trouble code so you can figure out if you have a bad O2 for example but didn't know it. I was hoping there was a similar "Trick" for the computers in the 'stangs. But i will check at CT to see how much the real deal is going for.

Thanks,
A50snake
