Cool Intake

Ok guys and gals. Please excuse my ignorance on this. I have a stock 89 gt vert, ecxept for a flowmaster catback. What are the advantages of a new Intake(example gt40)? How much hp will I gain from this ?

I agree with Stock865.0 ....BUT....if you really wanna switch out the intake, doing so would give you gains. About 10-15 hp on a stock head 5.0. If your not planning on changing out the heads anytime soon, a very inexpensive (way way less then an aftermarket intake), and viable alternative is to go with a stock ported lower intake. On a stock head 5.0, a ported lower will give you the same gains as an aftermarket intake. PM me if your interested in a stock ported lower intake.

Word to the wise, if heads are in your very near future, spend the money on an aftermarket unit straight out.

I'm just looking at ways to make it a little quicker. I really dont't race the car but I'd like the power to be there if I need it. I'm planning on advancing the timing this week end.

How long have you have you had that pricey flowmaster cat back (that is actually slowing you down)?

I say sell it to a nother mustang guy who wants the loud barky 5.0 with nice tips...use the the money to buy two Magnaflow (straight through design) yet extremely quite, some turn downs, and some stainless or even stock replacement flow tubes, and you can then bolt all that up yourself....save weight, runs quiter (a little noiser in the car...but do you really mind to be FASTER than them other guys????)

How much are you planning on advancing the timing? Don't forget, the more you advance the timing the higher the octane you'll need to prevent detonation.

Are you talking about porting the lower so you get even flow to all eight cylinders or are you talking about going with a Tmoss style lower?

Spend the money on an aftermarket intake. Try to stick with the same manufacturer. ie- Edelbrock intake, heads. Trick FLow Intake, heads. Holly Systemax intake, heads.

It does depend on where you want this car to end up and how far you are willing to go and what budget you have. Be prepared for a surging idle and or hesitation when you begin to mix and match your setup. I would not suggest porting your lower because your heads are still stock and will not match up. Some guys used to take a old f-150 lower and port it. Technology has come to far for you to ignore it. I like the Edelbrock because you can gain easy access to the inner flow of the upper due to the removable end cap. Just my 2Cents.
