noisy power steering, driving me INSANE. what could it be?

hey all,

since i got my car its been making an annoying whine when i turn the wheels and its driving me crazy. is it the power steering pump? hoses? im sure i dont have any leaks. i have heard ford has the crappiest pumps that make noise but is there some sort of fix or even a way to quiet it down alittle? thanks.

Make sure that your fluid level isn't down, causing the pump to be noisier than usual. The Ford "C II" pumps of that era have always been noisy buggers. Sometimes it is trapped air in the system too, if it has had a recent repair such as a hose replacement.

In any case, if it's an original pump that is just noisy, my suggestion is to try some of the Lucas power steering fluid additive. I'm not generally a believer of "mechanic in a can" remedies, but the Lucas stuff does seem to help that gen of Ford pump.

cheers

Was just going to say that around that era, the Ford pumps were pretty noisy no matter what vehicle they were in.
But could be any of the systems/issues that Ed mentioned too.
