Guys with 500's well any Pony

Lets assume for a minute that the 14 5.0 has a hp bump to 475 the 500 bumps to 620 and the V6 goes up to 340hp, would this entice you to buy a new Pony. Or is it more a combination of looks and power that gets you into the show room. Not being a speed demon I tend to be drawn in by the look and the price personally.

herbz 10-06-2011 04:26 PM

For me I'd be all over the power and look into something new. I'm not sure the V6 and 5.0 would see gains of that much but its already pretty concrete the 500 will be pushing 600+ by 2013. My question now is when someone is going to step in (the government/insurance companies) and say enough is enough when it comes to horsepower. Mini-vans have nearly 300hp these days. But then they'll probably just revert back to the tactics of the 60's and 70's and say its has 375hp and it really has 475.

2COKEMAN 10-06-2011 04:32 PM

My Gt500 has a supposed 540hp , but the new 5.0 is faster than mine because the power gets to the tires much better so power is not always the answer

No new pony for me. For me it's not all about the power but a combination of power, looks and body style. Personally, I do not like the back end look of the new ponies. For me the 05 - 09 were the best looking models made. So my limer is a keeper no matter what else I may do AND I now have enough power to keep me very happy.

ChadStang 10-06-2011 05:18 PM

For me it's the whole package. For example if I owned a 2012 5.0 right now and the 2013 had a 50hp increase but nothing else it wouldn't entice me to switch. However if it was the increase as well as a new bodystyle then I would consider it. I found after driving a new 2011 for a few days that I saw all of the shortcomings in my 07 even though it has another 100 hp. The interiors and handling make all the difference.

I'll agree with that. I'll take an 05-09 any day just for the looks.

No matter what i don't think i will up grade, i like the styling of the '99 to '04. A little retro with a little modern mix....... Just have to get on the wagon of hp, and make mine faster when my money tree decides to bloom one day.:banghead:

I remember the first time I saw the '99 in a magazine. It was yellow...beautiful. I ripped out the page and put in on the fridge....I love that retro styling. I think hubby and my kids (who were just little at that time) thought I was a bit nuts. :)

SNAKEBITE 10-07-2011 06:04 PM

some great answers folks.

I remember thinking..... What the hell is Ford thinking..... because i was a hardcore foxbody guy. It was the '01 special edition Bullitt that won me over to the new edge.It looked so clean, and simple!

I liked all of the body style changes but when they went away from the 5.0 to the 4.6 I thought that they really screwed up. Didn't take long to prove me wrong.

SNAKEBITE 10-08-2011 05:31 AM

I have gooten used to all Ponies except the 2 and unless modded nicely the 94-98

DublDee 10-08-2011 11:24 AM

I like most of the generations of Mustangs, but the 99-04 will always be one of my favorite. Not really sure what it is about them, but when they first came out, they were a hit in my opinion.

Yes the 2 is a questionable time for the Mustang for sure. The previous generation wasn't a favorite of mine either.

I agree. It's when Ford really started to do things right. Look at the special edition cars available such as the Bullitt and Mach1.

StangMan001 10-09-2011 09:00 AM

Mine is a keeper....love this body style too much. Plus way to much plastic on the '10+ & what's with the tail lights?
I agree the '05-'09 is my favorite style. Power isn't a major deal breaker for me....there is always someone faster than you. But I'm planning some power upgrades in the future to keep up with the times...lol!

Yeah everybody has their own opinion, I am actually in love with my '10. The front end looks so much better, and as far as too much plastic am I missing something, cause I don't think the '10 has anymore plastic than the 05-09, I think actually has less since they made the dash plate out of "real" aluminum on the '10, and it's look alike plastic on the '05-'09...:?

StangMan001 10-09-2011 10:59 AM

Sorry, I meant the exterior with all the black plastic. I like the 10+ interiors & I agree the front end looks mean for sure!
I watch the guys in our club putting all that back to black stuff on their rocker mouldings, rear bumpers & fronts of their stangs....I get tired watching them...lol.
Just reminds me of the chev avalanches, if you don't keep up with it it'll all turn dull.

Rick

DublDee 10-09-2011 01:27 PM

I hear ya on the up-keep thing, it's a bitch! I am actually looking at buying aftermarket pieces that can be painted, so I can have the rocker panels, and back bumper all Grabber Blue. Some people have painted the stock ones, but I've been told by a few body guys that those stock pieces are not meant to be painted, and will eventually peel right off, so I guess that means more $$$ for aftermarket piecces!:banghead:

I agree and that is one thing I didn't like about the my GT500. It's weird that the GT's had painted stuff but mine didn't. One good thing is that you never get rock chips I guess.

We're on the same page here...cept for the colours and ragtop.
My moolah doesn't grow on any tree I have. But I would still think hard about getting another newer one if it did. More than likely get an older one.

SNAKEBITE 10-10-2011 07:08 AM

good call on the back to black, with my ailments I hate applying it

Had my rockers painted cause I like the look better. The car was a year old when we bought it and the rockers were already faded with stains and what looked like white marker paint. So, no regrets on the paint even if I have to get them redone some time in the future. The new rear facia was also painted to pull the color all the way back from the side view. The facia was designed to be painted, so shouldn't have a problem with that. I like the 2 piece bumper style of the '11's.

Just wondering what is it about the parts exactly that they can't be painted. Is it not a painted surface,, like an impregnated colour or something? Or is it because of the material it's made of? Years ago we used to paint cars ( FORD) and they peeled right in the plant before leaving, but they found out the reason was they weren't being prepped properly. Again, just wondering. :?

SNAKEBITE 10-11-2011 05:35 PM

prep is the key

Red Pony 10-11-2011 07:39 PM

We had an '89 Ford HD 3/4 ton that needed to be painted when it was less than a year old. After an argument with the service manager it was repainted under warranty. I think the problem was the primer.

BLKnRD09GT 10-11-2011 07:54 PM

Sometime if the people are new into the plant that worked on the car, they don't know what they're doing. Yes, it happens more often than you think. They don't get trained properly or whatever. But they wipe the unit down ( for dirt) with something they shouldn't and then the paint doesn't ad-heir. But there are lots of other reasons as well. Like Red Pony says, it could have been the primer in her case.

The last body shop I took it to, told me the front grille surround could be painted, as it is a "paintable surface", but told me the side skirts were not. Not too sure why, but I do know the grill surround is smooth, and the side skirts are rough, so maybe that has something to do with it:? Anyway, he talked me out of painting the grill surround, and I'm glad I listened. I saw one last month at the local show & shine, and it looked terrible.

BLKnRD09GT 10-11-2011 11:18 PM

Hmmmm, I'm going to have to have a good, close look at one ( 2010) now. Most things can be painted. Like SNAKEBITE said above prep is key. Most people are in too much a of a hurry to get the paint on, and don't prep enough. Even body shops ( time is money). Then, unfortunately it shows. Next time you go to some shows, have a real good, close look at the paint job. You'll be surprised at what jumps out.

SNAKEBITE 10-12-2011 04:51 PM

you could sand the stipple down to smooth then paint

ChadStang 10-12-2011 06:51 PM

^ I agree, I've had mirrors done that way

Red Pony 10-12-2011 07:01 PM

They didn't sand mine. They used primer to fill and then painted.

BLKnRD09GT 10-13-2011 02:00 AM

Is that what is on the car that is supposed to not be painted?.....the rubber ( stipple) rocker coating?

DublDee 10-13-2011 10:25 AM

How long have yours been painted, and how do they look. I really want mine done, but just took the guys word that it wouldn't work.....

SNAKEBITE 10-13-2011 05:14 PM

the mirrors is what made me think this is possible

We put them on the car April 1, two days after painting. I had all the other parts painted at the same time (spoiler, side window loovers, hood scoop, side scoops) and the finish looked exactly the same on all parts when I picked them up. The paint on the rockers is perfect. The install is quite interesting. It's all clips, so just line 'em up and give it a smack. This has been my dd all summer and I've put on about 17,000 kms. Haven't see any problems with the paint and haven't found any stone chips either. The car will be stored through the winter, but will be cold storage, so we'll see if that has any impact, but I wouldn't think it should.

Red Pony 10-13-2011 06:55 PM

***delayed reaction to my kms *****

OMG! I can't believe I put that many miles on this summer! I love driving my Mustang!! Can you tell?

SNAKEBITE 10-14-2011 04:27 PM

Yes and I don't think the cold will affect the car which will just be sitting
